Aren't you in some village in Asia? Who gives a ?
North American on average throw away 35% of their food. I stumbled upon this data a year and a half ago and it really bothers me personally. I grew up around people that at times wouldn't even have food to eat the whole day.
I remember 7-8 years ago or so I worked at both KFC and and Local Market. During my stay at KFC, they would throw out cooked chicken and fries that wasn't sold that day. Good for customers for sure..we all want good food. My problem was that, there was so much food thrown out, I kept on wondering why not just give this away to the homeless shelter a few blocks away? they are all perfectly fine food...Everyday multiple of buckets of chicken and load of fries were thrown out..It was against the company to eat it yourself, you can't give it to the poor...so you just have to throw it out.
Same with Fruits and Vegetable in local markets...Oranges, apples, broccoli, etc...Once it sat there for a certain number of days, they throw it..it doesn't matter if it's perfectly fine...same rules, you can't give it away, you can't eat it etc
Imagine if we can just give all this to the poor.

I used to live in a tiny village in Asia when I was a kid..No one ever had problems with food there...Crabs, Shrimps, fresh fruit, chicken, eggs, fish, Rice etc. no one even needed a dollar there to be able to eat 4X quality meals a day.
Americans should require higher quality so their kids eat/order less.
I remember working at Costco and holy at the wasteland of returned material crap in the back. One worker [Deli] ate the leftover Chicken and left the bones out to not try and hide it. He was obviously canned.
The thing with forcing employees to waste vs save/take home?; is they will purposely over-produce knowing they can take home. It's simpler to make a clear line as a Corporation.

Where i worked, if the chicken still looked good we would keep it and it would be the first thing out the next day. CHicken tenders and fries were thrown away or eaten on break after closing time (think it was against 'rules' by our bosses let us)
Well, some peopleand depending on the food, yes. not me, though.
Comes down to money at the end is what I think. Why give it away for free at the end of the day and make people pay for it during that same day. People would then just wait till it was given out for free and not waste their money.
the reason why foodchains and supermarkets dont give away free food pass its used by date is due public liability man....they dont want to be held responsible for food poisoning...
but in most cases they usually donate to food bank for the needy...
but those items thats still on used by date or just a few days over, why not just donate it to charity food vans who cook it on the day of receiving the goods...

Giving away food actually require a decent amount of cost to deliver. It's much cheaper to throw it away than to give it..Much much cheaper.
At the end of the day, businesses are there to make money...I think if we can give businesses a form of "Food donation tax break" It should at the very least make business consider giving knowing that that there isn't much financial burden if they do.
all stock purchases is tax deductible, allowing what u just recommended thats double dipping into the tax system deduction...
"Sell before dates" Are usually manufactured dates that has absolutely nothing to do with spoilage. I was looking through statistics, and there have been 0 reports of people complaining about food poisoning after eating or drinking after the sell before date. Not to mention, if I am not mistaken, business or individuals are not liable for potential health hazards in food donation cases...On the surfaces it looks like the case, but in reality it's just all about money.
I just find it hard to swallow knowing there's millions of starving people In N.A, but we still throw away 35% of our food....I realize companies could potential abuses a "food donation tax break" of some sort..but there's gotta be a way IMO.
Food waste does not exist in my house as you can see.

My daughter goes to a fancy schmancy culinary school that also does not donate their food because local food pantries and charities do not accept already prepared food. Since I pay for her tuition, which covers the cost of all the food she prepares, I have her bring home her classwork so I don't have to cook dinnerBut on days that there is just too much food, she and some of her classmates wrap up a few extra portions to give to homeless guys the see on their drive home. The guy who sells newspapers on 281/1604 is looking a bit chubbier these days

Nobody's died of hunger in the US during any of our lifetimes...and those who are "hungry" are a burden on society anyways
True, if people knew they could wait to get it for free, why wouldn't they?
Having worked at a superstore (i.e. partial grocery store), I was told a major reason why food would get thrown away was because people would try and return food that was donated and get a refund, which makes little sense to me given that the items generally get marked off before being donated. Anyways, people would try to get partial refunds and ruined it for everyone and thus every night I'd shake my head as tons of food would just get baled and destroyed.
It's an issue of liability, whether it is food, old books/cds, clothes, somone will find a way to get hurt and turn around and sue. This is why we can't have nice things.
They don't accept produce, perishables or prepared foods. I'm not sure of their policy on packaged foods past the use by or sell by dates.
