For Aging GOP Voters, The Times They Are A-Changin’

Needless to say, GOP strategists are tearing their hair out, hardly believing their bad luck. After a grueling series of primary debates damaged their brand in the 2012 presidential cycle, they tried to rein them in, hoping to show voters a cast of serious and sober candidates.

But the superficial changes — including cutting the number of primary debates — don’t get to the much larger problem afflicting the

Republican Party: Its strategists have spent decades appealing to the worst instincts of their cons uents, and they are now reaping what they’ve sown. It’s the voters, after all, who are keeping Trump’s hopes alive.

Those voters have been treated to years of bombast and propaganda as Republican politicians pandered to their fears, their prejudices, their hatreds. The late Lee A er confessed that GOP pols perfected a strategy of playing to the bigotry of whites uncomfortable with the changes wrought by the civil rights movement. Too savvy to denigrate black Americans directly, they used a coded language, A er said in an interview: “… You’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites …”

That vile Southern strategy was never retired. It was simply given a 2.0 upgrade that denounces Islam, defames Mexicans and slanders gays and lesbians. Oh, and savages President Obama.

Having been fed that drivel for half a century, aging GOP voters are hardly going to suddenly surrender their gospel truths.

No, Trump’s appeal won’t last. But the prejudices that are animating so many GOP primary voters are more enduring. And that’s where party leaders need to start their work.

As an aging (and angry) white Southern reader once said to me: “I’m being told that everything I was taught as a child is wrong!” ( yep, you were lied to, brainwashed with hate)

    http://www.nationalmemo.com/for-aging-gop-voters-the-times-they-are-achangin/

Repugs created and pandered to their monstrous base with lies, hate, prejudice, paranoia, "enemies", and now the monster is out of control.

It’s not who he is, it’s who he hates: The secret to Donald Trump’s toxic appeal

It’s not what Trump’s for that makes his fans love him. They love him instead because of what he is against. Even more specifically, it’s who he’s against — and who is against him — that, in Trump’s backers’ eyes, makes him so great. Obviously, when it comes to the “haters” and “losers” who comprise Trump’s enemies, Mexicans and other immigrants are at the top of the list. After all, these are the “criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.” who are taking American jerbs and bringing in “infectious disease.” But it’s not only Latinos who are to be hated; it’s China and Japan, too.

Racism and xenophobia are operative here, no doubt.

But Trump’s brand of populist rage is rather free-floating; and his supporters seem to be even more passionate about his domestic foes. As Elspeth Reeve put it in the New Republic, some Trumpites love him because he is so aggressively politically incorrect. “He doesn’t know what ‘PC’ means,” as one New Hampshire supporter raved. For these people, Reeve writes, Trump is appealing because “he violates social taboos but not their own political sensibilities.” He says what they believe but don’t have the guts to say for themselves.

Yeah, I just saw where he is still leading in the polls. Conservatives are just making a statement to awaken the other candidates to what they want.

In Bid to Take Attention from Trump, Other Fifteen Hopefuls Release Joint Sex Tape

WASHINGTON —In what critics are calling a desperate attempt to draw the media’s attention away from Donald Trump, the other fifteen candidates for the Republican nomination have released a joint sex tape.

The tape, including such luminaries as former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Texas senator Ted Cruz, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, and New Jersey governor Chris Christie, appeared briefly on major news Web sites before an avalanche of viewer revulsion demanded it be taken down.

According to Carol Foyler, a viewer who happened to catch the tape during its brief appearance on the CNN Web site, the video contained images “I may never be able to get out of my mind.”

I couldn’t believe that these people would participate in such a thing,” she said. “Except maybe Santorum.”

A spokesman for Rick Perry defended the former Texas governor’s appearance on the tape. “It changed the conversation, at least for a minute or two,” the spokesman said.

Possibly as a result of his exclusion from the sex tape, in the aftermath of its release Trump has surged another eleven points in the latest poll.

Donald Trump Never Raped His Wife And Even If He Did It Was Classy

the Daily Beast reminds us that during his very classy and completely amicable divorce from Ivana, the former Mrs. Trump accused Donald of raping her.

This is not entirely unknown, as the incident is discussed in a 1993 book,
Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, by Harry Hurt III, which is really not a porn name at all.

The details of the accusation, from a deposition in the divorce case, are sordid and gross, and not only because they involve Donald Trump.

Also, the Daily Beast piece informs us that one of Trump’s attorneys, Michael Cohen, is one huge asshole; his epic hissy-fit at Daily Beast reporters Tim Mak and Brandy Zadrozny is a story in itself.

Will any of it hurt the Trump campaign?

    Why would it?

Trump supporters love him because he’s a sociopath, and for all we know, a little rape story could actually boost his popularity since the mean liberal media is beating up on him.

Donald Trump's only real foreign policy idea: steal foreigners' oil

It looks like Donald Trump's presidential campaign is going to be with us for a little while longer, and probably through the first Republican debate. At some point, then, it becomes impossible to avoid talking about Trump's policies — yes, even his foreign policy.

Trump doesn't really like talking about policy, and he doesn't have what you might call a clear policy agenda. But there is one quote that really gets to the core of his foreign policy worldview and what a Trump administration foreign policy would look like. Here it is, from a 2011 TV appearance (emphasis mine):

I very simply said that Iran is going to takeover Iraq, and if that’s going to happen, we should just stay there and take the oil. They want the oil, and why should we? We de-neutered Iraq, Iran is going to walk in, take it over, take over the second largest oil fields in the world. That’s going to happen. That would mean that all of those soldiers that have died and been wounded and everything else would have died in vain– and I don’t want that to happen. I want their parents and their families to be proud.

Yes, Trump believes that America should "take Iraq's oil."

    "de-neutered Iraq" WTF?

Taking Iraq oil is exactly echoing head's National Energy Policy of 2001

As Irin Carmon at msnbc.com writes, “There is a long history of conservative opposition to the very concept of marital rape, which is a fairly recent concept in law.”

She cites conservative pundit Phyllis Schlafly, Virginia legislator Richard Black, and the infamous Missouri congressman Todd Akin, all criticizing bans on spousal rape.

In most cases, they claim that they worry about the poor hypothetical husbands falsely accused by vindictive women during divorce proceedings. (Of course, people file false reports on other crimes, too, including assault and theft, but for some reason no one thinks the solution is to legalize those behaviors.)

But the fact that this at ude has a home in conservative circles shouldn’t really be a surprise. After all, resistance to the idea that all forced sex is rape is hardly limited to the question of spousal rape. Public discourse about sexual assault has been on the rise for years now, and the conservative punditry is still a reliable source of people spouting ignorance about rape that sounds more at home in some misogynist Internet forum than in supposedly mainstream media.

Like James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal playing
the “rape is just drunk girls expressing regret” card. (In reality, it’s that rapists pick intoxicated women because they know they won’t be believed.)

Or George Will suggesting that a clear-cut case of rape can’t count because the victim willingly dated the rapist in the past.

Or Andrea Tantaros on Fox News whining, “Where’s the personal responsibility for both sides?”—by which she means the victim and the rapist. “Really!” she continued. “If we say ‘personal responsibility for women,’ the feminists go berserk! They’re like, ‘No, we should be able to wear whatever we want and drink as much as we want and pass out in the streets.’”

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/cafe/tr...+%28TPMNews%29

Repugs, conservatives are pro-rape misogynists. No need to wonder why Dems vacuum up a huge majority of the female voters.

Mark Cuban Has the Dumbest Reason For Supporting Donald Trump

I don't care what his actual positions are. I don't care if he says the wrong thing. He says what's on his mind. He gives honest answers rather than prepared answers. This is more important than anything any candidate has done in years.

Donald Trump Wants To Tap Sarah Palin

I would love that because she really is somebody that knows what’s happening, and she’s a special person. She’s really a special person. And I think people know that.

And she’s got a following that’s unbelievable. I still have people saying, “Oh, get Sarah’s support, get Sarah’s support!” No matter where I go, everybody loves her. And she’s got a tremendous — she has, like me, she’s got some people that don’t exactly love us, and we understand who they are, and you sort of forget about that.

But she has a tremendously loyal group of people out there for her, and I think now maybe more so than ever, you know — I’m looking at some of these candidates.

They’re weak, they’re ineffective, and you know, to a degree that’s actually almost hard to believe. And you know they like the Sarah Palin kind of strength. You just don’t see much of it anymore.

One of the things I most admire about her is that she took so much nonsense — lies and disgusting lies — and she handles it so well. She’s tough and smart and just a great woman.

    http://wonkette.com/592272/donald-trump-wants-to-tap-sarah-palin-wonkette-dies-of-orgasms

    Grifter News:

Sarah Palin's PAC, like her TV career, on the wane

Unlike many political action committees, very little of the $753,000 it spent from Jan. 1 to June 30 went directly to political candidates and committees.

Instead, SarahPAC’s top expenditures largely helped fortify its own existence — or help Palin personally.

Federal rules governing spending by “leadership PACs” — committees run by current or former elected officials — are notoriously permissive, with both Democrats and Republicans regularly using the cash to fund lavish travel, pricey gifts or just about any other self-indulgent expense.

    Top SarahPAC expenditures include:

    • $230,250 on consultants, including $80,500 to longtime aide and PAC treasurer Timothy Crawford
    • $139,932 on direct mail, produced by conservative fundraising firm HSP Direct
    • $128,482 on postage, printing and related supplies
    • $82,213 on travel and accommodations, including airfare, hotels, car and SUV rentals, travel agents and taxis. The Waldorf Astoria in New York City ($4,562) and Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas ($797) were two particularly pricey hotel choices. The $3,854 SarahPAC paid a New York-based limousine company came on Feb. 19, right after Palin appeared at the staging of Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary special, where she sat in the audience next to musician Taylor Swift.
    • $48,000 on speech writing, mostly to Aries Petra Consulting, a small limited liability company registered in Virginia and based in Los Angeles
    • $37,354 on Internet fundraising through Austin, Texas-based Harris Media LLC, which works for numerous conservative politicians

SarahPAC spent $25,000 on candidate contributions during the first half of 2015 — less than 4 percent of its overall expenditures.

Reps. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas; Trey Gowdy, R-S.C.; Raul Labrador, R-Idaho; and Ted Yoho, R-Fla., are among the 43 candidates to receive SarahPAC cash so far this year, with most getting $500 — the per-election federal limit is $2,700.

Palin’s PAC has never given more than a small fraction of its income away to Republicans it supports.
