Bar Officially Cannot Be Lowered
MINNEAPOLIS — A group of scholars who have been monitoring the descent of the bar over the past few decades have concluded that the bar can no longer be lowered, the scholars announced on Friday.
The academics, led by Professor Davis Logsdon, of the University of Minnesota, published their conclusion after their research definitively found that the bar had finally dropped to its lowest possible position.
“For those who thought the bar still had room to be lowered, our findings resoundingly contradict that assumption,” Logsdon said. “The bar is now essentially flush with the ground.”
Logsdon acknowledged that he and his fellow scholars have come under fire in the past for claiming that the bar could not be further lowered, specifically when they issued a paper to that effect after the selection of the Republican Vice-Presidential nominee in 2008. (
“We got that one wrong,” he said. “Clearly, the bar still had a way to go.”
Now that the issue of whether the bar can be further lowered has been settled, Logsdon and his colleagues plan to examine the question of whether there is anything left to scrape at the bottom of the barrel.
“Our findings are preliminary, but it appears that the answer is no,” he said.

Trump University: How Donald Trump persuaded students to pay $35,000 to become just like him
From 2005 to 2010, Trump offered what he called "Trump University," which was supposed to offer instruction on becoming a real estate investor.
This was a generous — and, New York officials claim, illegal — use of the term "university." Trump's ins ution wasn't chartered as a university; he later renamed it the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative. New
York's attorney general sued Trump in 2013, saying the operation was a fraud, and former students have filed a class-action suit asking for their money back.
Trump University implied students would meet Trump himself
Trump University, which launched in 2005, didn't promise a college degree. It was a series of seminars at escalating price points that purported to teach students the secrets of successful real estate investing. The "university" started with a free 90-minute seminar, continued to a three-day seminar that cost $1,495, and charged $35,000 for the "Trump Gold Elite" package, which promised personal mentorship from experienced instructors "handpicked by Trump."
At every seminar, students were told that the most valuable secrets were only available at the next, more expensive level, according to an investigation from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Students were encouraged to call their credit card companies and ask for a credit line increase, and were told it would raise their credit score. Such a request is more likely to lower your score than raise it — but the students would then be able to borrow more to pay for the most expensive programs.
The attorney general's office found that although the mentors were supposedly experienced real estate investors, Trump University didn't verify their credentials, and some had never worked in real estate or had declared bankruptcy. Some mentors simply disappeared after the three-day seminar, even though students had paid thousands of dollars for a full year of instruction.
Although the promotional materials suggested Trump himself was heavily involved, even in "handpicking" the instructors, there's no evidence that he was.
"He's the most celebrated entrepreneur on earth," one pitch began, according to Schneiderman's lawsuit. "He's earned more in a day than most people do in a lifetime. He's living a life many men and women only dream about. And now he's ready to share — with Americans like you — the Trump process for investing in today's once-in-a-lifetime real estate market. … You'll learn from Donald Trump's handpicked instructor a systematic method for investing in real estate that anyone can use effectively."
Schneiderman's investigation found that most of the curriculum came from an unnamed "third-party company that creates and develops materials for an array of motivational speakers and seminar and timeshare rental companies."
Students didn't meet Trump, but they did get the opportunity to take a photo with a life-size cardboard cutout of him.
