It was a manifesto from the Lib Authority mandating the banishment of the word "American" and co-signed by every single person who identifies as liberal, because we are a monolithic group who agrees with and bows to every whimsical idea from our most fringe members.
what authority enforces the terms of the guide?
what happens to students who dare to ignore or defy its suggestions?

there's something jarring about policing speech on college campuses, but the OP doesn't rise nearly to that level.
"American" is imprecise, but it's probably how 99% of the world refers to us US citizens. I don't find it problematic; it's short-hand.
