It works on my end, but it basically 16 players under contract and 17 million over 70 million cap, also 2.33 million over luxury threshold. 87 million salary for the coming season

Right, but it doesn't take effect until later in the season IIRC. That means the Spurs have an opportunity to shed salary through trade or cutting. The Spurs probably aren't averse to paying the tax, but my guess is they won't have to pay as much as they're currently projected.

Just whack Williams and Fredette, and you're almost under. If Bonner is a partial, whack him at the deadline and audition a few 10 day wonders. It's catastrophic to pay the tax three years out of four, so dodge it this year if you can.
Kind of depends on how many other teams are over the tax threshold. If the share of tax money isn't all that great to begin with, no big deal going over a little.
Not for this year, but even $1 over sets you as a payer, and then you have to avoid in the future,paying two years out of three, possibly quite painfully. If you're close, get under if possible.

It's pretty clear that the Spurs have decided the pay some luxury tax this season, and well they should.
With the salary cap projected to go up to 90M next season, and then 108M and 120M the two seasons after that, there's absolutely no danger of the Spurs paying the repeater tax.
If I remember, the way they structured it, if you're $1 over you pay $1.50 in tax. If you're a repeat offender and you're $1 over, you pay $2.50 in tax. The tax percentage, and the repeat offender percentages escalate, the farther you go over the tax threshold.
So being a repeat offender isn't so bad, if you don't go too far over - since that's what it's based on. You don't get a distribution, of course, but you don't get murdered unless you go way over the threshold in the second (or successive) year. With the cap going up, I doubt the Spurs will be farther over the threshold next year than they are this year.

Commitment is in getting the right guys, owner allowing the GM and coach to run the team, players committing and not in paying more money. Spurs have been the most successful team in the past 10 years, so it's hard to say they should spend more money. Other teams do and cannot even sniff the Spurs success.
The article says that Jimmer's contract is guaranteed
I thought Jimmer's contract was only partially guaranteed with only $50k of it guaranteed.

"Thirteen of the club’s 16 contracts are fully guaranteed. The $947,276 veteran minimum contract forward Matt Bonner signed to return for a 10th Spurs season is guaranteed for just under $750,000. Guard Jimmer Fredette, also signed to a veteran minimum deal, is guaranteed only $507,000. Guard/forward Reggie Williams remains on the Spurs’ payroll at a nonguaranteed $1.185 million"
Jimmer's number is a partial guarantee. The vet min for him is $1.1M, so he has a partial guarantee of just under 50 percent.
