There are higher taxes because it pays for valuable and high quality public sector facilities like hospitals (great healthcare) and schools (no tuition fees, some of the highest educational achievement levels in the world). I don't understand American fear of taxation, I'd rather pay higher taxes for an overall higher quality of life over paying little taxes but getting ed by the ridiculously high medical bills and tuition fees that come with it.

It is free at the point of use. I would've been deflecting if I had called it 'free' only. Surely the 'at the point of use' part implies the taxation that comes with it, (that is cheaper to pay than extortionate medical bills in the US, no less.)
