The funny thing is, by doing this, it further shows how, basketball-wise, Kobe is no where even close to Duncan.

Back in 2011, even when Kobe had one more ring and had the big market effect, people were still putting Duncan ahead of Kobe, but there was a debate, mostly amongst Kobestans, that they are equal, with Kobe slightly ahead. But to do that, you would have to ignore individual accolades like MVPs and FMVPs, the ONLY argument was 5:4, and even with that, the real argument was actually LA:SA. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it, people just don't really want to say it.

Fast forward to 2014, with the Lakers doing historically bad, and the Spurs winning #5, with Duncan being the unquestioned leader and defensive anchor of the team, even at this advanced age, and even Kobestans have to admit that Duncan > Kobe. And that is WITH Kobe still in LA, pulling in endorsements and the larger reach of the Los Angeles market. Even though the Lakers are historically bad, Kobe is still pulling in coin because of his exposure to a large population of people, and that doesn't really speak to the basketball abilities or accomplishments of Kobe, but more to the reach the team he plays for have. Despite this huge advantage, Kobe is STILL viewed as < Duncan by most of the population, be it traditional old school analyst or the new age advanced metrics guys.

It's like comparing Kim Kadarshian to Judy Dench. KK definitely pulls in more coin, has way more investments and exposure than JD ever did or ever will, but no one in their right minds will ever say KK is a more accomplished artist compared to JD.
    LOL

Does someone really need to post that poll with the map man? I know AMB is an overboard Kobe hater, but he is right about Duncan being viewed as better by most of the population.

Done before Duncan won his fifth, and even then most people picked Duncan.
63% for Duncan (since Duncan DID win his fifth) vs. 30% for Kobe.

    http://espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPoll...pollId=4587835
65% vs. 35%, which each of the 50 states in the great ole US of A, along with international votes, having Duncan over Kobe (Duncan even won in California, 53% to 47%). Most of the other 49 states have the split closer to 70/30, and the international market, DESPITE what Carpisunman said about Kobe being an international brand, had Duncan 64/36.

    The internet reacts: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/espn-...duncan.267877/

    http://www.city-data.com/forum/baske...nt-poll-2.html
This was done in 2013, before Duncan won his fifth, and Duncan STILL led 45-28 (about a 60/40 split)

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...-or-tim-duncan
Even bleacherreport, about the most main stream media, has Duncan over Kobe:
The numbers are remarkably similar across the board between Bryant and Duncan. Both have been very, very good for a very, very long time.

But part of what makes NBA basketball great is nuance—the stuff below the surface that sometimes goes unnoticed. In the same vein, I think it's clear that after looking below the surface in this comparison between Bryant and Duncan, there is a surprisingly robust amount of evidence that says Duncan's resume is more impressive.

Advanced statistics certainly favor him. And a deeper look at his postseason success shows that he was more integral to his team's championship runs than Bryant was to his.

So it's time to give Duncan the credit he deserves, and in an unpretentious fashion that Timmy would undoubtedly approve, here it is: Tim Duncan has had a better career than Kobe Bryant.

And if the Spurs take home yet another le in June, the gap between the two will only widen.

I dont disagree with Arcadian. I already said I am now taking Tim. I just dont believe that the population agrees. All-star game votes and plenty of other signs jersey sales etc. say otherwise. The ESPN poll yuou listed was taken just after Duncan won a le (IIRC) if a similar poll was taken last June I am sure many would take Curry over Durant and maybe even some over LeBron ...

And I already know that in CHINA (the most populated country on earth) your post would be false ... LOL ESPN polls ... eSPN only matters when they back your side.

But again who cares? Doesnt matter to me but your assertion is false.

I posted multiple polls, most when it was Kobe 5: Duncan 4, and they still chose Duncan.

Second, international markets in the poll chose Duncan over Kobe. International includes China. So your point is moot.

Third, jersey sales only accounts for a subset of people, and is biased towards players in larger markets. Also, buying a jersey doesn't mean agreeing the player is the best. If that is the case nobody would ever buy John Wall or Carmelo jerseys.

Fourth, all star games are position dependent. SG is extremely weak the last few years. Who else should people select other than Kobe? Harden only came on strong the last year or two.

Where as Duncan had to go up against compe ion so strong, players like LMA and Randolph routinely doesn't even make the all start teams.

Again I dont even care enough to argue the point that much. I disagree. You can write another 3 paragraph response it won't change. Duncan is higher than Kobe on my list now ... you have that ... but I know much more than hoops than the average person ... but the average person will take Kobe over duncan.

Lumping china with "international" doesnt change the point that Kobe is 10x more popular in the world's largest country by population so you were wrong. Go ahead and do your research prove Duncan is more popular in China and I will concede the point ... in fact i will place any Duncan pic you want in my signature where Kobe is now.

LOL All-star game votes and jersey sales Affected by big markets? No . Just proves my point ...Kobe is more popular with more people. you can argue it's due to a bigger city or larger fanbase but again that just proves my point ...and much better than a ESPN poll will. If you buy a jersey or vote for a all-star you are more of a basketball fan than someone who just clicks on a poll.

Im with arcadian (and you) the savvy metric fan will favor Duncan ... but there is a lot more of the common fan than the deep dive ones ... like you Arcadian, or myself.

Kool, don't forget China's richest man investing on Kobe (the founder of Alibaba Jack Ma)

    http://deadline.com/2015/08/alibaba-...al-1201490411/

Turns out Alibaba founder Jack Ma really is a Lakers fan — or certainly a Kobe Bryant fan. Last October, China’s richest man was spotted courtside at the Lakers’ season opener, sandwiched between WME chiefs Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell, during a week in which he made highly-publicized rounds of Hollywood. Today, some of what was perhaps percolating on that trip has become clear. Ma’s e-commerce giant Alibaba Group has entered into a wide-ranging agreement with Lakers star (and WME TV client) Bryant via his Kobe Inc start-up.

Here and in LA it stopped being about Lakers' basketball after 2011 when Cubes and Phil did the three legged race around the area, Mark hopping like mad behind him. Since then it's been about pomp and cir stance. It's LA Housewives Lakers edition.

You have a few pretend Lakers fans here who never had a decent schtick but you also have some real deal fans who keep hollerin' "TANK" and thus the tank rolls in and after it leaves, it's not like battle of the Bulge, it's more like Tiananmen Square with Kobe being the little standing in front of it.

Oh, trust me. L.A. is still about the Lakers and we Laker fans are still about basketball. Kobe's success off the court is just cherry on top.

You gots wouldn't know basketball if one raped you in a hotel room. You're all about players, not games. You've never been a Lakers' fan, only a Kobe fan. You gots got a fugazi when you thought you had the next Jordan, and you've held onto that notion as it carries you into the abyss, telling everyone who will listen "We got a real diamond". When asked about your team, you cannot even name them. You have no idea who your starting 5 will be, you only know Kobe. You stood idly by as Lamar Odom was sold off like a slave, while Pau was done dirty and eventually left, while Bynum was sent packing for nothing. You were sated because Kobe was still there. Who are those other guys? Who cares... Kobe's the best.

    Asian player fans are funny.

You are mixing up liking and ranking higher.

David Robinson is my favourite player of all time, but I'm not going to say he is better than Magic or bird or Jordan or Kareem or etc.

I would buy his jersey and vote him in the all star game before voting for any of the greats. Doesn't mean I think he's better

I like Sean Elliott and Manu more than I like Duncan, doesn't mean I think they are better than Duncan, or even comparable.

And China is part of international voting. The question isn't who is more popular, it's who accomplished more.
