there's a bunch of articles by ex-pats to CR, Panama, etc. Even some books on Amazon. I sorta got into it because of a friend who was considering going ex-pat. There are good and bad experiences.

I spent some time in San Jose CR to same about $20K on dental work. It's a poor country, in 100s of ways, but probably better than other around there. Panama is apparently drawing increased ex-pat interest.

yeah, I've been checking it out. Real estates not cheap anymore in the really developed areas but still some pretty good deals compared to US...and lifestyle and living expenses look pretty reasonable. I could sell the ranch and buy a pretty radical place on the beach.

I read an article by one guy who had his entire set of appliances, internet, everything electric blown up by an an electrical storm. Then there's questions of access to medical care, emergency medical, water, heating, etc, etc. A lot NOT to take for granted.

my wife & I are considering the expat thing. Looking at costa rica, panama, ecuador...

    (would miss my guns)

Quality medical care and way cheaper medical is one of the main draws, but I'm hesitant about the loss of medicare.

I kind of figured if something really bad happened health wise we could always come back to the states.

I think CR health care system may be rated higher than US. Not sure what all is included in the ratings.

I meant that I would not want to lose Medicare eligibility. But yeah, i could join Medicare, and fly back if i wanted to use Medicare significantly for something.

    More research needed...
