In his book...LIFE...he talks about the roots to his music and the impact them old blues had on him, Brian Jones and Jaggar. He then delves into some of those legends. It doesn't take you many pages to figure out this guy knows the music. I was actually stunned, I had no idea he was that heavy into the roots of it all. He knows the music!!

If someone like Keith Richards has a low opinion of rap, as do I and most those not limited to the limitations we find in the young black world. it's pretty valid. Sure some black kid with about as much depth as a thimble won't know any better.

Why do Rap fans get offended by the genre being labeled low brow ignorance?

I've probably heard more artists/bands in my 66 years than anyone here. Everything from African/Indian tribal music, to convicts in prison, to Mexican, Irish, Caribbean, hillbilly, gospel, acid rock, punk, rap, hip hop jazz and on and on, ....Bach.

The Rolling Stones are one of the truly great acts in the music world. In the highest ecelon of musical artists. Right there with Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles, Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin,Bessie Smith, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Jellyroll Morton, BB King, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Wills, Roy Acuff.

If you listen you can already hear rap's influence. Toby Keith is one that comes to mind.

Stones are overrated. They have a good output of music and they created their own blues, rock, pschy style. But then they pissed away any claim to greatness by stealing their early riffs from blues and putting out several decades of ordinary music.

Mick Jagger is a great singer, they wrote good songs. But they are at best a B+. I think the beatles are in the same class. Great songwriters but not especially noteworthy on their own merits. The beatles were more forward though, broke barriers for white men, and put out truly good albums. And they had the good sense to die off when their era ended.

Black Sabbath is pretty much on par with the Stones as far as lasting impact when you look at how metal was born. Stones just inspired a buch of frat rock bands. Black sabbath also had the good sense to die rather than put out average albums. But the difference in talent between ozzy and jagger is not great. They just had different styles.


It's ok to like the stones.....i do. I just don't think they;d stand out if they started a decade later, great songwriting notwithstanding.


as for rap.....this is my first time hearing wiz and man he is slow monotone rapper. I do like too short though.

The Stones is a legendary band but for Richards to make such a remark is ridiculous. Rap changed music in a way they never did. They were influenced by many as much as any other band is. You can hear the influence of rap in many genres from rock to country.

70s era Stones, while not as great as their 60s output, was superior to a lot of the music coming out at the time. What the Stones did in the 70s by soaking up the music of the time, putting their own spin on it and usually improving on the trend was brilliant. Punk, funk, disco, country... The Stones did it better than just about anyone.

For example, listen to one of the greatest (by sales/consensus) rappers of the past decade or more, Kanye, try to sing without autotune/effects? sounds terrible and most people at Karaoke could do better. But he's a great writer with good hooks as long as he stays within his limited vocal range. Same with Jay-Z, and many other rappers who "yell over a drumbeat."

That's the surface of mainstream rap. Terrible music written by producers instead of artists. Keith pals around with those same slimy producers, so he has nary ing room to talk. Good hip hop with a positive message will never make the radio, so you will never hear it unless you dig for it. Selling out means a lot more than just cashing in, Keith, Kanye, Jay-Z sold out a long time ago and are just playing their part.
