You should build one. Then take it to the Boston marathon and show it off to people in the crowd. That would be good way for you to test whether or not it looks like anything that people could mistake for a bomb.

No, the whole point is that you have benefit of hindsight, and no idea how threat assessment works.
It doesn't matter if it looks like a bomb to me. I wasn't in the school and didn't need to make that assessment. The cir stances surrounding it were shady enough to warrant su ion, and since the Muslims have tied themselves to the terrorist moniker of their own free will (if that's a real thing) then their people will be suspect. Skittles and Arizona Ice Tea didn't look like a bomb either, but the actions of the individual involved quickly escalated the confrontation. I've been pulled off planes before because the device in my checked luggage looked su ious, and said "sodium" on the canister (never mind the other chemical names, it said sodium and hey that's dangerous). CNN did not show up to interview me. I didn't get to talk to Mark Cuban. I was interviewed, showed my paperwork and off I went. Same happen to the kid. He's not going to prison nor was he shot.
