off topic: Serious question: When will we have progressed enough that you would become a status-quo guy? Is there a limit? Single payor, then what? What tax rate on what income level would you find high enough - the horrible Bush tax cuts are gone (at least on the wealthy, most Americans still enjoy theirs)? How many industries owned by the government? I mean Canada has a single payor system, and yet progressives are not happy there...still blame their woes on corporations and conservatives...

The only way to make healthcare less expensive is to make the actual cost of healthcare less expensive.

Unfortunately this truism is lost on most people. They think HOW something is paid for can dramatically effect what that thing costs.

Assuming you don't believe compe ion can be a viable solution, eitther utilization and/or price controls are the only answer if we really want to control the expansion of healthcare costs. Of course, controlling costs also means people losing jobs...

Compe ion is a wonderful thing.

Health care in the US doesn't really have any, so that market assumption sort of breaks down. I can't shop for doctors on price, and certainly can't really evaluate the quality of care very well by looking online at doctors.

I think no small part of the problem is that we have a fee for service system, with runaway tests for everything, and practices that have begun to treat patients as revenue streams, as I have witnessed firsthand.

Single payor, yes. We all collectively pool our risk anyways in all sorts of hidden, inefficient ways. The huge costs get buried in the cost of everything else.

Businesses in Canada tend to appreciate not having to worry about that on their balance sheet.
