    OSLO — Berit Nordgarden and her husband, Eivind Tellefsen, loved their nonpolluting Nissan Leaf electric car. But they found its 85-mile battery life too short for weekend trips to their cottage with their two young children.

    So the outdoorsy couple took a deep breath and bought a second car: a Tesla Model S luxury sedan with three times the battery range, the best of any electric car on the market. Buying an $87,000 car was a stretch, requiring them to refinance their primary residence, a cozy wooden home in Oslo.

    But the Tesla would have been completely out of reach — costing perhaps double the price — without generous subsidies and incentives that the Norwegian government offers to encourage the adoption of e-cars...


    This is very fascinating and it's actual reporting unlike Darrin's Scandinavian post. At this point, it seems like more of experiment than anything but I hope the long term results are good.

    car industry knows they have to go full EV sooner or later as the demand will be insane when the battery breakthrough(s) arrive. and the car servicing industry will collapse as EVs are much simpler, less fewer parts, internal combustion engines will be seen as as ridiculous as horse and buggy.

    Due to being a very wealthy and hard-core democratic socialist petro-state, with educated, mostly geneous populace, Norway is not a good model.

    govt subsidies everywhere for Teslas is just another unfair perk for the 1%.

    No, it's not a good model for us but we can learn some lessons from it. But why would an educated genous population matter?

    Anyway, you can tax gasoline cars above $50K (each dollar over $50K subject to extra sales tax) that upper-middle class people might buy and use the revenue to introduce a higher electric car subsidy. Just one thought. There is already a $7500 federal tax credit on Teslas.

    geneous means Norway doesn't have significant racist, xenophobic group people electing politicians to everything up like the USA does.

    Scandinavian countries are more or less in consensus, even with left/right variations, on how to run their countries so there is a high quality of life for just about everybody.

    USA can't even increase the 25-year-old gasoline tax to build, maintain roads. USA will never tax gasoline, "it would destroy the country", BigOil with their ALEC/Repugs s would block it.
