Then why not pay him another 50 million to hang around? Salary cap cares, and the Lakers' decision to choose Kobeism over fielding a compe ive team is a bad sign for the future of the NBA. The Lakers were always noted for fielding a tough team, and sparing no expense to to so. Now they are not fielding anything of note, paying one person to sell merchandise to the hordes like a flea market operation. LA has become QVC of the NBA.
There's a false dichotomy being applied here as well. It's possible to sell merchandise and field a compe ive squad. By building a fan base of player lovers, the Lakers have guaranteed themselves a tough road in the next 10 years after Kobe retires. Who will be that player to push that merchandise in LA? Nobody. So now you'll have a ty team AND no revenue from merchandise sales or ticket sales. You'll be totally dependent on the TV contract.
