Crazy. I remember reading yesterday that he would miss the season, and I knew then something was up. But I didn't expect to read the next day that he had died. RIP.

Sucks. When I heard he was taking time off, I just figured it would be similar to what George Karl did. I wonder if he passed away from complications from treatment rather than from the cancer itself since it was really sudden. RIP Flip.

He was incredibly overrated both as a coach and a manager, tbh... was handed a championship team and did nothing of note (not all his fault, but he was partly responsible)...

Luckily his family should be set for life...
smh you're better than that, nono

This was a bizarre case, since his lymphoma was treatable and curable. Perhaps the chemotherapy poisoned him? That's not all too uncommon... either way, something a bit fishy here.

Ran into him at the All-Star weekend when it was here in L.A., just shook his hand and say nice to meet you Flip. Seemed like a personable guy but he was with his fam and I didn't want to intrude. Godspeed, Flip. May you no longer feel the pain of cancer.

Cancer is incurable. Its basically a natural death disease to me.Its only treatable or surgery.
    Thank you Dr. Berra.

relax Treatable and curable isn't the same thing. Treatment is to help slow down it down.

What the guy above said isn't true at all. Many cancers are curable; some are curable well over 95 percent of the time, such as thyroid and testicular cancer, and feminine cancers are often so if they are caught early enough and the women are willing to forfeit certain body parts. Flip Saunders' cancer was thought to be not only treatable but curable as well about 2 months ago, so something else must have gone on (My personal educated guess is that his body had an adverse reaction to the chemo or other procedures, because Hodgkin's generally doesn't kill someone that young that fast like pancreatic or something.) Craig Sager was supposed to be dead by now after his second diagnosis, but he's going to be back on the sidelines tomorrow albeit 50 pounds lighter. In America, doctors are like chocolate boxes and the competency of such oncosurgeons are probably the largest variable in whether or not many cancer patients live or die. Their primary interest is usually to stuff their wallet as much as possible and that's why our life expectancy today hovers around 80 years rather than the 85-87 range like in more altruistic healthcare countries like Canada and Northern Europe.

(Note: I'm a conservative on most issues, but the capitalist healthcare system has fed the greediest doctors and even greedier insurance companies for far too long, and probably needs to go. If anything, the socialist education system should be privatized and healthcare should be publicized, but Obamacare is still a half-assed cluster that needs to go.)

Best W/L % of any Pistons coach ever....three straight ECF appearances (losing twice to the eventual champs)...that's pretty goddamn good. Thanks for the memories, Flip.

He coached the Pistons right after back to back Finals trips.
Good point. And they won 64 games that year. I just never felt like the Pistons would win again by then, tbh. But that team certainly had a chance; so, I guess he did have his chance.
