But if the reasoning is circular, where is the grounding of the value? There is no tangible basis for it; it is purely a social construct.

In what capacity do you think of them as geniuses? Only from an individualistic, materialistic perspective can you possibly arrive at such a conclusion. If you look at it from a capitalistic or compe ve stand-point they are geniuses, even if evil ones. The limited supply. the timed releases the re-releases. The special editions. Not only do Jordans sell out. they re-sell them to you for more money 5 or 10 years later as "classics". Even if they are morally bankrupt, It's marketing and salesmanship at it's finest.
