NEW ORLEANS — With a victory that defied political geography and near universal predictions from just months earlier, a previously little-known Democrat, State Representative John Bel Edwards, soundly defeated United States Senator David Vitter in a runoff election on Saturday to become the next governor of Louisiana.

Why upset? All indicators were it was JBE's to lose.

JBE won't accomplish much positive, except line item vetoes, in a deep red slave state where the Senate is 26R - 13D and 59R - 44D reps. JBE won because Vitter and Jindal were so horrendously bad.

What are you talking about? The deep south is never a "democrat's to lose".

Vitter had a massive lead and pissed it away.

you said deep south, I didn't. It's as LA election only, not a deep south election.

LA Repugs were coming out for JBE, even nutcase loser Jindal said LA is now in the good hands JBE, showing how BAD Vitter was.

Of course, JBE can do almost nothing over a legislature and judiciary being totally rightwing, other than line item vetoes.

So.... LA has had a lot of democrats elected lately, yeah? Care to list them?

Not initially. Vitter was doing fine until he railroaded his campaign into the ground. He should have easily won that election.

slave state, duck dynasty, swamp people LA electing a Dem is obviously an anomaly, probably won't happen again for a long time.

That LA Repugs couldn't nominate anybody but a john shows how ed up they and all Repugs are, Trump, Carson, etc, being the same kind of ty Repug candidates.

I'm gonna agree with Bouton's here.

Vitter had an early lead, but was such a terrible candidate, its startling that there wasn't a better GOP dude running. Vitter's campaign was awful besides just having a shady past. Listening on the radio here in Lousiana, his campaign was all about trying to link JBE to Obama. Every single ad was linking JBE to Obama, especially this past week when he brought up the Syrian refugees and the Paris attacks and trying to link it with Obama and JBE. He really had no other way to attack JBE other and had no other record to run on.

If the Republicans in general run the same way by trying to go after Obama, its going to be a losing strategy everywhere. People want solutions.

yeah, really stupid to link JBE to Obama, since JBE has not served in DC. But post-mortems are saying that was only one of many screwups "john" Vitter's campaign made.

JBW will probably try to undo Jindal's crap, like try to extend Medicaid to LA's poor (blacks) which of course the Repug legislature will block.

JBE is half Dem, half Repug. On the top line Repug hot buttons, he's pro-gun in The Sportsman's Paradise, anti-abortion (he's Catholic), anti-immigrant (English as official national language)
