They are sitting at an underwhelming 14-11 and out of the playoff picture in the East..To put this regression in perspective, this team was 43-11 on February 11th 2015 ..

With no major injury other than the par-for-the-course Splitter nagging ones, this begs the questions: has Bud's system been figured out by league? was Demarre Caroll the team real MVP ? or just a case of the East's middle class improving quite noticeably this season ?

remember the 2014 spurs? It's easy to say we sucked b/c splitter, parker, and kawhi had significant injuries. But we also never got the beautiful game despite having Diaw, Manu healthy.

Basically to play like that requires effort and superior conditioning. Atlanta had a terrible of season with the Thabo debacle, delly being delly, and various late injuries, they were probably demoralized. Add that Danny Ferry resurfaced over the summer.

This just makes the Warriors so much more impressive. or suspect. one of the two.

They played the Spurs, and Pop doesn't hold back against his padawans. I'd expect them to be right there vying for contention at the end of the season. Carroll right now seems like a huge loss, and Splitter is returning to his injury prone ways. They still have too much depth to rule them out especially with one of the best point guards in the league imo

So did Hawks get hosed on Tiago deal? Bud had to know Tiago was injury prone, or you think jury is still out?

I think someone else wouldn't do that deal without extracting bigger assets especially knowing the injury history of Tiago (already 8 missed games)

Yep. If you look at our stats from 2014-2015 we still had the same roster, but we had a lot of guys get injured at the same time during the toughest stretch of the season, and the rest of our guys regressed (everyone save CoJo and Baynes who improved, Danny and Tim were good but at about their averages). Mills, Kawhi, Manu, Tony, Marco, Boris shot worse from 3 and some statistically were reduced from 2 as well.

I believe it was attrition. Not only players were worn out, but the December month finished those who had to carry a huge burden without the other injured guys.

For ATL, yes they miss Carroll. He impacted the team both ways. I can't say Bazemore is the same quality player or Sefolosha. They didn't do enough to get better. Their perfect month was fueled by an incredible hot streak from Korver, shooting 50/50/90 at a high volume... He has come down to shoot 41% from 3.

in fact we would have sucked as bad as the hawks did last year if we didn't start giving Leonard more ball and didn't have HOF TOSB Duncan.

In hind sight, Splitter is still worth that trade. Remember, how pissed we were when we found out we weren't getting Tavarez? The expectation was that splitter was worth a non-lottery first round pick...maybe like 12-20. With the cap rise, Splitter is a crazy value, even if he is injury prone

Tavares is better than ter. We owe them one for being our cap dumpster tbh

Our defense is on pace to be one of best of all time. Coaches always talk about the inside presence in there with two 7 footers there waiting. LMA played thru a broken hand last year, ter can't handle bruises.

OKC is healthy, Houston is healthy, LAC are as healthy as their excuse machine will let them be, and GS is rolling over people. The Spurs have been playing basically in spurts and sleep walking through the rest of games and blowing people out still. We'll revisit after the break, see if anyone has shown any signs of improvement. Right now it's expected.

Wasn't Korver kinda playing out of his mind from 3 early last season? He came back down to Earth for sure in the playoffs and doesn't seem to have regained that impressive form. Have to take into account how this affects spacing as well.

Looking now, he shot almost 50% from 3 last season, and he's a little below 42% right now for this season. I think his crazy accurate 3 point shooting was a good part of their early success last season.

They punched above their weight class most of last season as OP stated. They started 43-11 and finished 60-22, meaning they finished the season a 27-11 which is very respectable but not close to as successful as their start. This years 14-12 start is continuing on the decline which started at the end of last season after their incredible first 54 games. To go with their late regular season decline you factor in their playoff record...

1st round v a Brooklyn team they only won 4-2
2nd round of the playoffs Washington took them to 6 games also and only won 4-2
Then they were swept 0-4 by Cleveland which gave them a 50% playoff record of 8-8

This 14-12 start is just who they are. Last year was the anomaly imo.

They replaced Demarre Carroll with Kent Bazemore and Thabo Sefalosha.

And Bud as a GM this summer was like a drunk guy on OKCupid. That trade for Tim Hardaway Jr. has to be one of the worst, most pointless trades I've ever seen.

Pop has the 15th pick once, and he gets Kawhi. Bud has the pick twice in a row, and he gets THJ and a 2017 Minni first that may be nothing but a couple of seconds. If you're looking for a reason why the Hawks have taken a step back, you just found it.

they just need star power..At the end of the day, Millsap and Horford are very good 3rd bananas on contender, nothing more, noting less.. Even when the Spurs played this equal opportunity offense wile making deep runs in 2012-2013, we had Parker playing like a top 5 MVP candidate in those two seasons in great stretches..

And yes, Bud should concentrate on coaching, his early stint as GM isn't looking very promising.
