Good get for him. That said, I'd rather have Ehlinger.

Anyone really believe Herman will be in Houston for 2017 if he has another upcoming season similar to this last. I know a lot of kids are loving Houston right now but Herman won't be around too long.

Good question. If they raise his salary he likely stays. If a big time job comes open then probably not. He is waiting to see what happens with Texas. He isn't interested in Aggy though they might come calling and offer some dough. But there is no reason to go there.

FOOTBALL BRANIACS– Handsome Tanielu: Last week Texas offered JUCO DT, Handsome Tanielu (Snow College). After speaking to Tanielu it was clear that the Texas offer made him rethink his recruitment. The issue he is having is, as a January enrollee, he won’t be able to take an official visit to Texas before school begins at some of the other schools he is considering. Last we spoke with him, nothing had changed on that front but we will continue to check with him.
For those of you wondering why Tanielu was offered so late, simply put the staff didn’t not know about him until last week. In fact they offered him the morning his name came across their desk. Trying to be as objective as possible, given how urgent the need is at defensive tackle, this oversight probably falls on someone inside the recruiting department. You can call a number of JUCO coaches around the country and ask them who the best JUCO DT is and Tanielu’s name will be the first name out of their mouth.
Tanielu worked in Texas last summer and in talking to him it’s clear the interest is there. It’s hard to imagine that had the offer come a little sooner and he would’ve been able to take a visit to Austin that Texas wouldn’t be in the drivers seat for his commitment right now. – (Super K)
Chris Daniels and Jordan ******: Related to the note above, I know some Texas faithful feel that the offer to 2016 DT and OU commit Chris Daniels came much too late as well. Daniels committed to Oklahoma last week. As we mentioned, Daniels family is originally from Arkansas and Charlie Strong knows them and even played with Daniels uncle. Daniels plans on visiting Texas in January.
Andrew and I chatted about why the offer came so late (according to Daniels’ father, Strong said they wanted to make sure he was academically eligible – though from everything I’ve heard Daniels has no academic issues – and wasn’t aware that Daniels was interested in Texas). Andrew mentioned a reason for the delay and I suspect it is the most likely…Texas coaches believed they would land Jordan ******. Having spoken to ****** myself on a number of occasions, I can tell you that up until recently he was indeed a huge Texas lean. His commitment to Michigan surprised many.
Last I spoke to ****** he was standing firm on his commitment to Michigan but if Texas picks up a few key committments and he makes it over to Austin for another trip in January, then things could change. – (Super K & Andrew)
Under Armour All-America Game: If you follow Texas recruiting, I highly suggest you watch the Under Armour All-America Game on January 2nd. There will be multiple top Texas targets in the game, also a few of those targets will be making their commitments during the game. These recruits will be playing in the game:
    S Brandon Jones
    OT Patrick Hudson
    S Deontay Anderson
    RB Devwah Whaley
    LB Jeffery McCulloch
    OT Jean Delance
    CB Eric Cuffee
    LB Dontavious Jackson

Those are some players Texas fans are dying to get in the 2016 class. They may add a few of them that day. As most know OT Jean Delance will be committing during the game, as he named a Top 3 of Texas, Michigan, and LSU yesterday. RB Devwah Whaley will be making his final decision during the game as well. Whaley’s orginal plan was to commit at the game, instead he committed to Georgia on Thanksgiving only to decommit a few weeks later after now Miami HC Mark Richt was fired. Whaley’s top schools right now seem to be Texas and Arkansas and my source close to Whaley’s recruitment remains confident that Whaley will end up at Texas. CB Eric Cuffee is another recruit who could possibly commit during the game. He told me recently he’s a “maybe” on if he will commit during the game. He said if he doesn’t commit on January 2nd he will likely hold off until NSD. If he commits at the UA Game, I like Texas’ chances as he’s coming off his Texas official visit that really blew he and his mother away. The last recruit that possibly commit during the game is LB Jeffery McCulloch. I expect McCulloch to push his decision back so he can take some more visits, but this seems like a Texas-Notre Dame battle.
This could be shaping up to be an absolute HUGE day for Texas and their 2016 class. So as I said before, I’d tune in. – (Andrew)

I can't tell if this is good news for us. Probably not, at least he will OV to Texas now. Sounds like good news to A&M for sure but then Higdon says that there is a 1000% chance that he DOES NOT sign with A&M. Notre Dame and Stanford are the other contenders correct? Michigan seems out.

Cuffee signing with us is so far the biggest slap to Aggy. He was silent commit to them and now everything is pointing out way. Best CB in the state, I like.

Update on DE Mark Jackson of Cibolo Steele (24/7):

“Honestly, I didn’t commit (to A&M) because of any quarterbacks – so it didn’t really affect me too much,” Jackson said. “People made it seem like the end all be all – like ‘aw, it’s time to drop everything and jump ship,’ but I didn’t really feel that way about A&M.”

“I met him (Coach Bedford) my freshman year so our connection is pretty close,” Jackson said. “We’ve just talked about how I would fit into the scheme, how it [Texas] would fit me as a student with their excellent business school, and how I’d be playing the FOX position in his defense.”

“I just don’t know if it’s (Texas) the fit for me,” Jackson said, emphasizing his last two words. “You always get those feelings when you walk on to a campus – when you get into that environment that fits you. I didn’t have such a great fuzzy feeling when I stepped on campus."

“I’ll be taking my official though – on the 15th [of January], I believe. So I’ll try it out one more time, and we’ll see what happens after that.”

SCOUT: If Texas president Greg Fenves and athletic director Mike Perrin want to finish the rescue mission that started with them on a private jet to Tulsa to hire a new offensive coordinator and O-line coach, they better now be ready to go get Charlie Strong's right-hand man - Clint Hurtt.

I reported on Tuesday that Alabama’s Nick Saban would have an interest in hiring Charlie Strong’s defensive right-hand man – Clint Hurtt (currently the Chicago Bears’ outside linebackers coach) - if Bama DL coach Bo Davis goes to South Carolina to join the staff of Will Muschamp.

So if Texas president Greg Fenves and AD Mike Perrin want to complete the rescue mission that started with them flying to Tulsa to close the deal with new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert and OL coach Matt Mattox, they better now be ready to go hire the man who can help turn around Texas' leaky defense - and recruit like crazy - Clint Hurtt.

Texas doesn’t need any more faulty communication about the hiring of an assistant coach seen as a solution to solving the problems on one side of the ball. The embarrassment the last time - with Fenves and Perrin on a plane as an official visit weekend was kicking off - never needs to be repeated.

Fenves and Perrin simply need to get with Strong right now, so that when the Chicago Bears’ season ends on Jan. 3 against the Detroit Lions, all the details of Hurtt’s hiring are already complete.

That is if they are still all about supporting Strong.

As one big-money donor who has been highly critical of Strong told me when asked if he’d try to make things difficult to hire Hurtt:

“I say if we’re going to support Strong, let’s support him all the way and hire whoever he wants. As far as I know, Hurtt has paid for the NCAA sanctions against him. And there was no problem with him at Louisville.

“ , if he’ll help improve that defense, go hire him right now!”

There is no doubt Charlie Strong wants Hurtt on his staff in 2016 as a defensive assistant – probably as co-DC. Don't know if it would be as DE coach with Brick Haley as DT coach or what?

But according to the sources I talked to at Louisville, if Texas fans want to see the defensive numbers improve dramatically in Austin, Hurtt is the guy.

The people I talked to at Louisville said Hurtt was Strong’s “staff cop.” Basically, whenever there was drama on the staff – on the offensive side or defensive side - Hurtt stamped it out.

“I think Texas fans know Vance Bedford can get charged emotionally about something. There were times when Hurtt would just say, ‘Who the f*ck cares about that? We just need to coach the damn defense to get off the field.’ Hurtt doesn’t do drama, and that’s Charlie’s guy.”

Former Longhorns and current Chicago Bears' OLB Sam Acho and DT Lamarr Houston are on the record saying they have loved playing for Hurtt in Chicago.

Here’s Hurtt talking about Houston and some of the other Bears he’s coaching as assistant DL coach/outside linebackers coach under John Fox:

    http://www.chicagobears.com/multimed...2-32cf0e141704

I hear Hurtt is willing to leave the NFL (and his progress toward the NFL pension) if Texas is ready to see him come to Austin and help turn around the Longhorns’ defense.

Texas officials objected to Strong bringing Hurtt with him to Austin from Louisville in January 2014, because Hurtt was still under a two-year, show-cause penalty (related to NCAA sanctions against Hurtt while at the University of Miami during the Nevin Shapiro scandal).

Hurtt was the recruiting coordinator and DL coach at Miami from 2006 (under Larry Coker) to 2009 (under Randy Shannon). From a timeline standpoint, Shapiro, in prison for defrauding investors of more than $900 million in Ponzi scheme, by his own admission, was already entrenched as an out-of-control booster at Miami starting in 2002.

Hurtt was with Strong at Louisville from 2010-13 without incident. Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich stood by Hurtt when Hurtt was sanctioned with the show-cause penalty.

But that two-year, show-cause ended in mid-October, and the Chicago Bears’ season is over on Jan. 3.

In addition to being a no-nonsense, hard-nosed defensive football coach, Hurtt is widely considered one of the best recruiters in college football.

At Louisville, Hurtt helped recruit QB Teddy Bridgewater, an NFL first-round draft pick, and S Gerod Holliman, who had 14 INTs in 2014 and won the Thorpe Award.

This is how much Strong thinks of Hurtt: Strong ended up turning down Tennessee (after initially accepting the job), because Tennessee wouldn’t allow Strong to bring Hurtt with him. The job ended up going to Butch Jones.

Again, if Greg Fenves and Mike Perrin want to finish the rescue mission that started with them going to Tulsa to get the assistant coaches now charged with helping to save the offense, they’d better be ready now to go hire the coach who will be charged with saving the defense.

Or everyone at Texas could end up with the possibility of watching Hurtt coach at some place like Alabama.

Don't be surprised in Elliott is back in the fold once Clint gets a go at him. Also look for him to have an impact on the rest of the Houston crew.
