And you gain them back the next year if you don't sign with anyone else, which is why Manu would have Bird rights if he opts out this summer.
That's why they used the Room Exception to sign him. Tim was signed with Bird Rights.
And you gain them back the next year if you don't sign with anyone else, which is why Manu would have Bird rights if he opts out this summer.
The point I was trying to make is they couldn't have signed either one for more than they did and had the Aldridge deal work, bird rights or not.
They couldn't have signed Manu for the amount that they did using his Bird Rights, they had to renounce him and use the exception. All other signings remaining the same, of course.
The limited funds the team had at its disposal is exactly why I'm looking at those options are deferred compensation. The players were worth more, but they couldn't sign them for more. So the team gave them more guaranteed money. The option allows for them to opt out and re-sign for bigger deals next summer if they decide to play again.
When have the Spurs ever done that? The option also allows them to opt out and get a bigger parachute too. You sure like fixating on your preferred outcome and going full sophist.
The discussion is interesting to me, but cap situations and such are an area of ignorance for me. I think Chinook has a point in his speculation. It just makes sense if you consider that the pay for them this season was "stretched" fir two seasons, bc really their deals were too low fir their production. If they return I expect them to renegotiate their deal. Boban and West potentially also could see raises. Ray will see a raise as well. So the cap will go up but we have some guys who need to get paid who have been right by us. And the market will be hit even for our guys so I am not expecting anyone new. We have to hope for internal growth from our rookies, youngsters and maybe an addition like Bertans or Cady to give us some depth.
The 1+1 deals are protection/insurance for the players, even West signed a 1+1 minimum deal, which cost the Spurs more than a single year at the min would have, and he's most definitely opting out anyway.
The way I see it is that the Spurs believe the window would be open only with Tim and Manu playing, thus if they decide to retire after this season, they'd be OK paying them next year's deals as parachute payments and using next season to retool, knowing they wouldn't be contenders anyway and prepare for the 2017 summer when they'll have a lot of cap space.
If they're healthy and want to play another year, then they opt out and sign new deals using bird rights - most likely one-year deals as Chinook has proposed in other threads, paying them market value this time and preserving the 2017 cap space. We can only speculate on these things, obviously, but this looks reasonable to me. Definitely more reasonable than expecting them to opt in.
That said, I remember back in the 2000s people were absolutely sure 2012 was the year Pop, Tim and Manu ride into the sunset. Now we're speculating whethee Tim and Manu retire in 2016 or 2017. Been a great ride![]()
The thing that i am kinda bummed about Boban as of late is his weakness as a rebounder. His physique limits him as a PnR defender, and he is not nimble enough to be a great shot blocker, but Mark Eaton was dominant rebounder in his era, with similar body type, i really don't see why Boban can't at least be as good.
I am not sure why he doesn't board as often, but he's often out of position is a reason and doesnt box out well. He gets switches onto perimeter players defending PnR too often. I'd like him to play similar Ito Timmy, hanging back and giving space, being less willing to switch onto perimeter players. After that, he perhaps relied on his length and size too much before and now that is not enough without good fundamentals.
As critical as I have been of him I am really pulling for him to get better bc if he did he could be a special bench big for example since he has no troubles scoring and our future bench without Manu can go through dry spells.
Kyle anderson .84RPM. Boban 3 plus times better.![]()
OP now "hearts" Boban.![]()

This dude would average 40 pts, at least, if he would stop doing his best Ayres butterfingers impression. Catch the ball for easy points, tbh.

19.2 per 48 minutes, good for 5th among all NBA Centers.
Not sure what you guys are seeing with the eyeball test either.
I've also seen a lot of opponents be allowed to be physical with him with no call.
Not sure if that is the NBA bull rookie rule for non Lakers, Spurs bias, or just getting snookered because he is so freaking big that they feel the opponents deserve the edge.
it ain't easy playing bball with 10 thumbs
Didn't watch the game but he put up some Duncan numbers. +10. What's the problem?
Expectation level of some Spurfan is excessive.
Boban can contribute to this years playoffs.
I mean he was playing with LMA I'm guessing. Who do Spurs fans want the ball in their hands?![]()
I don't think Boban is judging flight-of-ball as well as some of the other good rebounding bigs. When matched with opposing starters, he's been less effective...and that's understandable. You know, some guys are just better at the geometry of the game, but it's something he can work on.
I think it's more him getting accustomed to NBA rules. Over seas the guy could practically goaltend. Now he looks hesitant when the ball is on the rim.
