It's done by the decades, starting with Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues" in 1920. So we have the 20's, 30's, 40's etc . Then we look at the urban/rural. Now add...piano, guitar,harmonica, jug bands, string bands, and the regions like Chicago, Georgia. Mississippi, Texas etc.

Right over there a four CD box set....A RICHER TRADITION......100 of the most obscure blues ever recorded and some of the best. I highly recommend ya find this and get it, it is a must listen.
This guy is the most...????...in them blues. He recorded but one song, yep...just one song. And nobody knows his real name or anything about him. Or how he managed to record at all. Noboby remembers recording him. But here he is.....

It's obvious that you don't know dem rare blues. Fister Magoo was born in the slop water on a small fishing boat. Yep...his momma worked up to the day she gave birth to him. And died on that same boat the same day. Magoo was traded around his family and neighbors...raised a little by all of them. Found an old guitar when he was living at his cousins' home in the swamps of Louisiana. Didn't know how to play it at all but could pick out some notes that sounded good with his baritone. Never got to make a record but his songs are still played down in those old bars and black dance halls deep in the bayou.
I'm not surprised you don't know him because you can't find him on....Google.
Why lie about Fister "Long Gone" Magoo? He was born in Four Corner Arkansas in 1897 in the McKinny Farm Labor Camp. He's dad had been lynched by the KKK shorty after his birth, so his sister Bertha and his mama Ethel Bee raised the boy. At 13 he hopped a train to Memphis and started shining shoes, while buffing away he'd sing his blues. So one day Jabo Williams a talent scout for Black Patti Records heard the boy and the rest his history. His recording of.."My Baby Beats Me Like a Yellow Bellied Dog Up and Down the Street"***... didn't sell well. And today we have but one copy left and it's in such a bad condition it can't be fixed for CD, which is why only guys like me know about him.
He was caught looking at a white woman on the streets of Greenwood Miss in 1920, a few days later they found old "Long Gone"...hanging from a cypress tree, yep.....long gone.

He did have a cousin who made it big in St. Louis, but was from Mississippi. I've read that Fister did sound a lot like him.

Dude...that's Fister "Ozark" Magoo. Anyone that's heard both Magoos AND truly knows the blues will tell ya that Fister Magoo (from the Bayou) was superior in terms of conveying that...sadness...that desperation....

Louisiana Johnny played a two string guitar with Kid Beecher (Cherrokee indian) on the mandolin. Great sound! They also recorded the bayou classic.

I was down in the bayou a few years ago and was making my normal round of the black gin joints. Normally a white guy walks in...music stops...all eyes on whitey until he leaves. Won't even serve him a cup of water on a sweltering day. Me?...I walk in...music stops...I nod to the bartender, the musician...give everyone a small smile...they can tell...this cat belongs here. Music starts again...I usually get a few drinks bought for me. But I ain't here for the free drinks...I'll tip what I saved in drink money.
Anyway...caught this cat...Porch Money Brown...played a set of Robert Johnson...but closed with a couple tunes I never heard. After his set we had a few Kamikaze shots and I asked him about those unknown tunes. He started to tell me about Fister...me: I know about Fister...these his songs? He told me they were. I wrote the lyrics down and filed the musical notes in my head.
I guess it's possible that he got it wrong...being so young...or he might have been drunk.
You were at a place called...Smokeys. It's out on Beta Tec road heading into Baton Rouge. Porch Money Brown (the cousin to a blues cat from Greenville they call....Itchy Sonny) is well know for his bull /yarns, he goes on and on. He somehow heard about Long Gone McGoo from Arkansas, then did his thing with it.
I played harmonica one Saturday night with Porch Money (real name is Henry) and his sister..Pot Hole Helen Brown, a great fiddler. We played at the county fair, we all got drunk, ended up in a row boat floating down a river...ha~~~
LOL. ing Pot Hole. Get a couple drinks in her and she gets pretty friendly. Sloppy drunk...not my type. But in between drinks 1 and 7, she's funny as .
If she'd had but three or four teeth it sure would have helped. Pot Hole was kinda cute with her mouth shut. As ya know she loved that rot gut, and yep, she'd get sloppy as . She tried to talk me into it once but when she smiled ......yuck~~~~
