So the guy who says he has the "world's best memory" knew David Duke 2 days ago, heard his name well enough in the CNN interview to repeat it thrice (so much for the ear piece explanation), but totally forgot who he was despite the interviewer reminding him multiple times that the David Duke in question was a former KKK grand wizard?1. Just so you understand, I don't know anything about David Duke, OK? ...
2. I don't know -- did he endorse me, or what's going on? Because I know nothing about David Duke; I know nothing about white supremacists.

What rational explanation do Trump supporters have for this sorry episode, except that this might have to do with the fact that a number of Southern states vote on Super Tuesday?

The left doesn't have to disavow their crazies (Weather Underground, Alinsky, Black Panthers, the ing Unabomber, Antifa). That is only reserved for their opposition, who will always be held to a higher standard than themselves.
Trump had already answered the question about Duke's endorsement... the media, in general, really doesn't talk about substantive issues. It's hugely to blame for our current state of affairs. They are more interested in the name calling drama than anything of substance.

In all actuality, it hurts his electability to do what he did, perhaps, than to say, "yes, the KKK is a POS". He turns more people away by doing what he did--because the left wont acknowledge the stupidity/unfairness/bias of the question, and will spin it as Trump loves racists"-- than the amount of voters he is keeping or acquiring. Probably not a smart move politically speaking, but I give Trump props for trolling the guy & Lefties for his question.

Actually they had been vacillating talking about party loyalty the week before. Then he panders to the KKK and several GOP leaders denounce him. If you think the split is good for his chances you are a fool particularly as I'm trying to point out in the bigger picture.

Romney has voiced criticism for Trump in recent months, including his attack last week on the New York businessman's refusal to release his tax returns.
Romney doesn't believe Trump is the right person to lead the party, the Republican source said. A number of mainstream Republicans are falling in line with Trump, and Romney wants to speak up before more people go that route, the source said.
While making the case against Trump at the Hinckley Ins ute of Politics Student Forum at the University of Utah, Romney will not endorse one of his opponents, two people familiar with the former Massachusetts governor's plans said. Romney will, however, praise Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, and Ohio Governor John Kasich. Romney’s comments will be focused on “the state of the race,” likely echoing past criticism of Trump for failing to release his tax returns.

Refusing to denounce them is about the closest thing that a presidential candidate has done to support them since George Wallace.
He denounced the David Duke endorsement the day before, and he couldn't clearly hear the question that has brought about all the controversy.
