The gangster candidate: Donald Trump and his supporters behave like the mafia, with veiled threats and acting above the law

Trump acts like a mobster more than a candidate, by issuing threats and enticing police to act like his muscle

One of the most notable aspects of the authoritarian personality, the kind that tends towards fascism, is for all the fetishizing of “law and order,” there is a tendency to think the rules are only for other people, and that you and yours are justified in breaking them.

So it is with Donald Trump, who crossed yet another line on Wednesday, in which he leveraged the threat of violence in order to scare Republican leaders away from blocking his nomination at a brokered convention.

“I think we’ll win before getting to the convention, but I can tell you, if we didn’t and if we’re 20 votes short or if we’re 100 short and we’re at 1,100 and somebody else is at 500 or 400, because we’re way ahead of everybody, I don’t think you can say that we don’t get it automatically,” Trump said on CNN. “I think it would be — I think you’d have riots. I think you’d have riots. I’m representing a tremendous, many, many millions of people.”

It’s framed as a warning, but make no mistake: This is a threat. This is pure movie mafiosi stuff: Nice convention there. Shame if something happened to it.

Trump’s ease in speaking like a gangster issuing veiled threats shouldn’t be the biggest surprise. While it’s gotten lost in the shuffle of the primaries, there’s a long history of allegations against Trump that he has ties to organized crime, hiring mob-controlled companies to build properties like his Trump Plaza condos. A great deal of his history of “deal-making” that he loves to brag about involves dealing with people who have literally been charged, investigated, and convicted of organized crime.

But now that mentality — do what I want, or there will be violent consequences — is being applied to electoral politics.

The abuse of protesters, the inciting language, the bullying of the press, and even putting your supporters through humiliating displays of submission? That’s some real “Goodfellas” , right there.

Which opens up the question of the role that law enforcement plays in this. While Trump usually dances at the edge of the law, violence is, as much as his followers might forget this at times, still illegal. But, as any good gangster knows, if you get the cops on your side, then the law tends to be less of an obstacle than it might otherwise be.

On this front, there are some serious reasons to be concerned. The incident at a North Carolina rally where a Trump supporter sucker punched a non-violent protester has drawn a huge amount of attention, thankfully, but one under-examined aspect is the role the five sheriff’s deputies that were leading the protesters played in the whole thing.

Even if Trump is rendered completely powerless to execute any of his agenda, he still has the most powerful podium in the world for communicating a message. He is the primary PR representative for the US on the world stage, and what he says has more impact on the content and tone of American political discourse.

Nobody should want Trump even having that kind of influence.

Seems to me that he already has the media wrapped around his little finger even without the position of president.

    Fox doesn't count.

CNN and the others are in it for the ratings. They dont actually foam at the mouth like Fox and Breitbart do.

Trump still dominates their coverage. You're mistaken about Fox - they want to take down Trump too (except Hannity). Meghan Kelly would like nothing better than for him to fall flat on his face. Trump's getting it from all angles.

If he loses the race he loses that platform. The media pays attention because he's doing all of this while running for President, and with success.

When he loses, he's just another lunatic. It's not a story anymore. His influence will be limited to his Twitter account and guest appearances on Michael Savage or that kind of .

Gov. Rick Scott refuses to rule out mob violence if Trump is passed over as GOP nominee

FL Gov. Rick Scott suggested disgruntled Donald Trump supporters might be justified in rioting if the Republican Party chooses another presidential nominee — but he refused to say whether those upheavals would be violent.

The GOP presidential frontrunner said Wednesday that his supporters could take to the streets if he’s passed over as the nominee at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

The editorial board of the Wall Street Journal hit back against Donald Trump Friday amid the ongoing war of words between the two.

    03/18/16 07:39 AM EDT

The Wall Street Journal fired back at Donald Trump on Thursday evening, hours after the Republican candidate demanded the newspaper's editorial board apologize for*pointing out*that he has thus far received fewer votes compared to Hillary Clinton in the primaries.

"On Thursday the businessman demanded an apology after we—'the dummies at the @WSJ Editorial Board'—accurately noted that Hillary Clinton has received about a million more votes than he has," the board*wrote*in a piece headlined "A Trump Reality Check."

"The truth hurts, though Mr. Trump would rather walk down Fifth Avenue shooting the me
"Clinton primary vote total is 8,646,551.Trump's is 7,533,692"-a knock. But she had only 3 opponents-I had 16.Apologize," Trump tweeted Thursday morning.

Later in the evening, the paper responded, "Actually his rise has been cleared by the large and fractured GOP field. Of the 20.35 million GOP primary votes cast so far, he has received 7.54 million, or a mere 37%. Despite the media desire to call him unstoppable, Mr. Trump is the weakest Republican front-runner since Gerald Ford in 1976."

"The opinions he should care about are the 39% of GOP voters who said in Tuesday’s exit polls that they would consider supporting a third-party candidate if Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton are the nominees, or the 44% of non-Trump GOP voters who said they won’t cast a ballot for him in November," the editorial board concluded. "As Mr. Trump likes to tweet, better be careful!"

    Seriously...

What do you expect from a college crowd mixed with a bunch of young kids?
During college football games we got lilly white frat boys from Penn. St peeing on older Ohio St alums coming to the game. Peeing FROM the stadium at height.

Show the 70 year old white guy sucker punching a black kid disrupting a Trump rally...I consider this a bit more odd.

It's sad what's happening on college campuses. For all the bluster and protests, Cook County (Chicago) went 41% to Trump (Kasich 25%, Cruz 22% Rubio 10%). So what race is that woman with the grey hair - she looks white to me but is bashing white privilege.
