That's just because teams like Dallas, Houston and Portland have been abysmal this season compared to years past,
That explains why the Spurs and the Warriors have such gaudy records, but it doesn't really explain why Memphis was in shouting distance of the Clippers and the Thunder in the west standings up until a couple of weeks ago.

Pretty crazy how many injuries. If they were at full strength it would be a matchup most teams would want to avoid.
They are a though match up despite the Spurs owning them for a few years now on end. I would not want this match up early in the playoffs.

yes it does, the 7th seed last season had 50 wins. This season, 50 wins in the West will likely land you on a top 4 seed. Heck, the 8th will likely barely surpass 40 wins...

It's not a matter of number of wins, it's a matter of seeding. The Clippers and the Thunder are not teams you mentioned that are terrible this year, and the Grizzlies were very close to them in the standings. Thanks to division games, both of those teams have more built-in cupcakes on their schedule than Memphis does. Does it mean Memphis is good? Nope. It just means they weren't as bad as people here are saying. To even have a winning record with that kind of turmoil is admirable.

Marc Gasol is an excellent player, but the key and most underrated player for the Grizz is Mike Conley. Having Gasol/Conley along with ZBo is good enough to stay within "shouting distance" of the Clippers and Thunder which they did, but once Conley went down, that was basically the end of Memphis' season.

They're still probably going to hang on to a 7th or 8th seed, because they already built up a decent cushion, and also because teams below them have been playing so poorly.

The Clippers have been pretty bad, especially compared to last season (considering the conference was much stronger then). Obviously, they had their own share of injuries. The Thunder have also generally underachieved, although it was somewhat expected due to new coaching. They seem to have been picking up the slack lately.

I mean, I'm calling "terrible" teams like Houston who went from 56 wins, WCF to barely 40 win team with basically the same roster and no major injuries (if anything, they were more hurt last season). Portland was also a 51 win team, and it will probably be low 40s (although losing LMA obviously hurt them). Dallas had another big dropoff... from 50 to likely under 40... and it's not that you have other teams picking up the slack. The rest (Suns, NOLA, etc) either stayed the same or got worse...

This is why if the Warriors get the record it's like meh...Spurs having their best record ever is also like meh...And, for what we accomplished the last 3 years is just that more outstanding...

Yeah I'm interested in this conversation, but they took a nosedive when Conley went out, so it's all kind of academic at this point.

Great point. I've been thinking about this too. In another discussion I started to type "best Spurs team ever" due to record, and then I wondered if that was true. I don't think it is. I think the Spurs are just taking advantage of a really weak western conference. I might have actually typed it but despite the record I don't think it's actually true.

Really depends on what we see in the Playoffs. As far as regular season wins I don't think it matters when trying to determine how great a team is. We all would consider the 2014 Spurs a great team but then again look at their record against the top squads in the regular season.

Me too!! Honestly though I have been stoked all season, watched every game intently until lately. Last couple it's been the fast forward button so I can do something else, playoffs can't come soon enough...

Time for Hater to make a "Avoid Warriors at all cost this season" thread.

Based on hater's history of predictions, the Spurs should tank to get Memphis in the 1st round, at all costs, tbh..

They're only five games ahead of Houston at this point. They could slide further down, and if they do they become the team everyone wants to play in the first round. OTOH, Conley is supposed to be coming back and if he's healthy they could be the team nobody wants to play in the first round, though that's probably a bit generous.

They have a very tough schedule - they're yet to play Toronto, Bulls, Warriors twice, have a head-to-head encounter with Mavs away and Clippers as well, though Clippers might tank again to keep them at 5. Would love them to fall to 7th but it's unlikely.

why? on paper this team is 3rd in the west. decimated by injuries, doesn't make anyone correct or incorrect, just makes this year''s Grizz a what-coulda-been.

What are you basing this on? Did you check out the date when this thread was started?
