As a coach, you know lockerroom/team chemistry trumps all, no matter the talent on the roster. Russell turned himself into a cancer overnight. How are the Lakers supposed to build around that moving forward? Doesn't matter that Young and half the roster will be gone next season. You think Julian, Clarkson, Nance, etc will trust him? Probably not. You think a high profile FA is going to want to play alongside a PG who "snitched" and violated lockerroom code? Probably not.

This also won't quickly "blow over" like some Lakers fans are hoping (comparing it to the Kobe/Shaq situation). If the Lakers were winning and Russell was a legit superstar, then possibly, since his fellow players would put up with him on the roster in order to win. But that's obviously not the case.
The Lakers need to perform a quick surgery and excise that tumor before it metastasizes.
