    From someone in the know.

    Here we go.......

First off let me say I picked the wrong day to go. Should've gone during a scrimmage. But whatever. I didn't stay long because I got a phone call and had a last minute engagement I had to get to.
Pace- Rapid. The turn around time on plays is REALLY fast. The offense would get into a rhythm and then "BOOM" something would derail it. Bad play, false start, missed assignment- and you could see all momentum just grind to a halt. This is practice- I get it. But the body language of some of the guys on O was that of frustration--- which leads me to believe that this happens a lot.
QB- can we find someone that can throw a damn out route? And not a 5 yard out I mean a 15 yard out.... TS throws like a scattergun. Either too "floaty" or too short. We loves us some bubble screens too. Don't get me started on his deep ball. Saw him hit one guy in stride. Other throws the WR either had to slow down, come back, or it was over his head. He threw three full on quails and his pass has developed a bit of a wobble. But we can't throw an out route to save our lives.
SB is about----- ok, hold out your right hand and make a fist. Now extend your index finger. That's about how big around SB is. He tiny. Decent arm but he struggles on the deep out as well. You can tell he's a little unsure of himself because before and after almost every play, he glances over at the staff for what I assume is approval. But as a freshman it's understandable. Suffice it to say, I didn't walk away with a warm fuzzy about the QB situation. It's going to be TS, like it or not.
I didn't see KL take a single snap which leads me to believe his days at QB are numbered. Sorry metcalf, I know you had high hopes.

WRs- we've got dudes that look the part. They look like NFL wrs standing there. Tall, gazelle looking dudes. Nobody that looks like Lovell Pinckney of course, but they "look" like football players. #1 is running good crisp routes and exploding out of his breaks. He needs to keep his eyes up more, I caught him looking down at his feet several times which means he's either A. Marking his breaks with his eyes (run to THAT spot and cut) or B. Just has a bad habit. I can't tell. His hands look better but with Captain Scattershot throwing, it's tough to tell. #85 and either #6 or #8 (can't remember which and I wasn't writing sh!t down) one of those two can't run routes for sh!t. 85 looks like an NBA small forward. Dude looks 6'7. He's got hops, but looks awkward running routes. And because he's tall, QB throws it up where only he can get it. I see a problem happening when we line up against a zone secondary that doesn't shower with him. A bad a$$ safety could cut him in half. I give him props for going up on the ladder over the middle but someone could easily lay him out, and he doesn't have to worry about friendly fire right now. Over all I give them a "meh"--- where as last year it was an "ugh".
RB- 33 is a big boy. 25 is a really big boy. 25 needs to realize he's not beating anybody to the edge so square your shoulders and get north and south. He's running to open grass and his has a tendency to want to try and get outside the box to make a play. E for effort but he'll make his money by running between the tackles. He's not going to beat you in a 100 yard dash, but he's not slow either. He just needs to work on getting the plant foot in the ground and exploding up field. The rest will take care of itself. 33 has some juke, quick feet, good vision, but needs to hold onto the rock better. I assume he's laid a few down this spring because he was getting chewed on a bit about it. Over all we are solid there.
OL and DL--- sorry, I can't grade them. Everyone stays up high during practice to avoid injury. You can't accurately judge guys that aren't playing at full speed in a game situation.
TE- it's 42's job to lose. Again, everybody stays high, but his blocking looks pretty good for a TE. Runs decent routes, isn't going to blow past you if you're a safety but if we can get him isolated on a teams slowest LB there will be a definite mismatch. He looks about 6'4 and has some a$$ on him and he runs nice routes. He's got a deceptively quick first step which will keep him from getting jammed. He's really our only option at that position.
LB- I said it last year and I'll say it again- 46 is going to kill someone. He's learning. Last year he was all over the field but out of position a lot. He relied on his speed to make plays and get him back into position after a misstep- like all great HS athletes can do at THAT level. Well folks, them days is over. He passed up so many kill shots it was silly. He's learned that if a TE is running a deep drag over the middle, instead of running towards him to initiate contact and risk over pursuing the play, to just wait. There will be a TE or wr running a middle crossing route this year that will have a brush with death. Write it down, in stone, hermetically seal it. 46 will go megaton thermonuclear on somebody. It's probably going to cost him a game when he does it, but you watch-- alligator arms will start showing up on crossing routes. I couldn't take my eyes off the kid. He's DJ takented. Different skill sets than DJ, but just as much talent- and it's starting to seriously click for him. The game is slowing down. Last year he was always in a mad rush to get somewhere. This year, no mad rush because..... he's already there. Phenomenal potential. Some poor WR is going to order coffee and 46 will serve it to him decapitated.
GDDH and #2 need to get their sh!t on the same page. Remember that deep ball I warned you about during fall camp? The deep ball miscommunication that happened twice in the same practice? Only to have ND throw the exact same pass and GDDH and #2 did the exact same thing they did in practice thus making us look stupid on national TV?

Happened again. It was like Deja vu. 31 looks confident. The rest of them look like clones. All the same height, same build, same everything. GDDH did break up some throws, but it wasn't Elway out there throwing pin point lasers, it was Captain Scattershot and his ilk. I was going to bring an 8X10 black and white of GDDH and have him autograph it "to my biggest fan metcalf, love Dylan" but I decided not to.

Not really a glowing practice but if my schedule allows, I will try and get back and see that last one before the O&W game.
We ain't there yet boys- I am curious to catch a fall camp practice when the OL and DL are down to the nut cutting.

OL Creed Humphrey of Shawnee, OK talks UT (24/7):

“I was really excited,” Humphrey said. “My overall interest level in Texas is high. It seems like they are going to be really good in the future. I like how they are building things up and how they are getting some recruits in.”

“Coach Mattox offered me back when he was at Tulsa, so I’ve known him for a while,” Humphrey said. “He’s a really cool guy. I like the way he coaches. He said that they like me as a center or a guard.”

“I got to see all the facilities and everything,” Humphrey said. “The city of Austin is great. The campus was beautiful. I had a lot of fun watching the scrimmage. It was a good visit.”

Those short cuts you had of the Houston workouts clearly showed how far ahead these guys are right now.
It would be fantastic to have a really good season and land just one of these two. It would be good for them to just hold workouts against each other. It looks too easy for them.

Imo Wilson needs to lose some baby fat if he wants to play entire games.

The biggest change in the offense so far this season has been the increased tempo; running as many plays, in as little time is possible. Some players are realizing just how physically demanding the tempo is and it has forced players to get in better and betters shape

    from the brainiacs

The coaches need to emphasize that playing in the Big 12 involves more than the weight room and 40 times. These guys that bulk up have got to do so without sacrificing ENDURANCE. The announcers often time refer to guy who have nonstop motors as something that just requires effort, that's just wrong. These are guys that are in top shape and can run for 4 quarters.

We we need to establish more than the ability to hold 4 fingers up. These guys have to keep moving the ENTIRE practice. There is time to get this done. I just hope summer involves some endurance work that is not excessive reps on a weight bench. They need to move the F'N legs the entire practice and then some. I hate an exhausted guy holding up 4 fingers 3/4 of the way through a game.

Sorry for the rant but the coaches need to do something about this if it can't be done in practice learning tempo. There is no tempo without athletes that have endurance. Exhausted athletes don't think about plays, they think about trying not to fall over.

According to Justin Wells from IT, Wilson won't make it to campus this week at all. He has the ACT on Saturday and very unlikely that he will visit during the week.

This 2016 season is absolutely pivotal for our program.

And it does not look so good at QB.
The Dline and Oline are thin.
This is a bit frightening, we maybe starting all over.
