Who has ever thought, much less said, that someone carried Zidane? The guy was the centerpiece of any of the teams he played for, and got 3 ballon d'or, 2 scudettos, 1 la liga, 1 CL, 1 Intercontinental, 1 Worlds Cup (the first for France) and 1 Euro Championship. That's complete as it gets and his technique was something outlandish.

I saw Diego in his prime, he has a similar resume, but he was better in a sense that he got his accolades when Argentina wasn't favourite ('86), and he got some scudettos with Napoli when they never won any before or after.

Messi outside of Barcelona, didn't do much. It's much harder to win a WC then a CL with tiki-taka Barcelona. I think Argentina didn't even managed to win a South American Championship with Messi.

So Zidane playing in a stacked team = being a centerpiece but Messi = "being carried"? Interesting...

Btw where did you get Zidane's 3 Ballon d'ors?

Zidane isn't even the best player of his time. Brazilian Robaldo is. Just stop, seriously. You don't know how ignorant you're being.

Zidane was much more versatile, hence he enjoyed success with Juve, Madrid and his NT. Zidane won the FIFA world player awards, the previous name of the ballon d'or.

The tiki-taka core of the Spanish NT won everything from 2008-2012, they didn't miss Messi at all.

Messi has fantastic but specific skills, he's more a system player. That's why he didn't have the same impact with his NT, despite Argentina always having several top players, and usually being well coached too. How can a player as good as Pelé or Diego not succeed in that conditions?

You can't be serious. Ronaldo got injured while in Inter, he was past his prime and overweight while in Madrid.

Zidane is not in any top 5 list anywhere... he's likely not even top 10, tbh, guys Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Garrincha, Di Stefano are clearly ahead of him...

I might even put Rolando right about his level, tbh...

What are Messi's specific skills? He's the all-time leader in goals and assists in La Liga, he has played as a winger, as a centreforward, as an attacking midfielder. You're tagging Zidane as "more versatile" when he couldn't defend even if his own life was at risk (I'm excluding headbutting as a defensive skill).

Fun fact: did you know Zidane won zero les in half his seasons at both Juve and Madrid (the famous "nadapletes")? That doesn't speak well about his ""versatility""

The so called "tiki-taka core" struggled to get past the group stage in 2010 and won the rest of the matches only 1-0. Such a dominance.

Messi has almost always been the best player in the NT. The reason why he couldn't win and i.e Maradona and Zidane could is because Higuain/Palacio choked their best shots whereas Valdano/Burruchaga and Trezeguet scored. About being "well coached" I agree to disagree.

P.S: the FIFA World Player was a different award than the Ballon D'Or (one was given by FIFA and the other one by France Football) and they were both fusioned under the "FIFA Ballon D'Or". Following your logic Messi would have 7 ballons.

The reason why Madrid buys any player that shines at the WC, at no matter what the price, is because the compe ion is at much higher level than any league.

Not trying to say any team wouldn't pay a lot to have Messi or Ronaldo, but that's difficult to succeed at WC, European or South American championships.

Zidane returned from international retirement to help France qualify and lead them all the way to the '06 WC finals.

He also made the first two goals in the '98 finals, in the 3:0 goleada vs Brazil.

Maradona also "lost the papers" at the '82 WC. If I recall right, Pelé had a similar breakdown too.

    This post is full of

so Messi did not win a WC because of Higuain and Palacio but then again you have no problem highlighting the fact Zidane won zero les in half of seasons not mentionning anything abouth Zidane's team mates... ok
