Last time I needed brakes, I did it myself. Just the price of the pads. The time before that, I bought new rotors too.

Brakes are a piece of cake for a parts changer like myself.

New rotors and pads x4 ran me about 200 for parts for the MB E class, did the labor myself though since it's my daily driver. Other cars, well, too much since their brakes are hard to work with.

This, it's really not that hard, especially on newer cars. Bound to be plenty of step by step youtube vids as well.

Brakes are the biggest scam in all of vehicle maintenance. After my brother showed me how to do it I was embarrassed I ever paid as much as I did to get them changed. If you don't know someone who knows how to do it then youtube is your friend as leemajors said.

I see the argument of doing it yourself for cheap, but I am the kind of person that would f it up somehow. It's number one safety feature on car so I would rather have someone else do it well

My trucks have ceramic pads so they last 100,000 miles plus but downside is you have to replace rotors at the same time. Costs about $1100.

yep. I always think I'm going to do something myself. Some plumbing...car work...electrical wiring... I'll check out some YouTube or buy a book. It all looks simple enough.

check again...ceramic would break to pieces. Ceramic is what they make some bowls/dishwear/tile out of. I'm not sure if you're thinking of anium or something else.
I dropped a can of something on our tile and it cracked it. Just like that. Not to mention if it gets wet, it's slippery as .

I'm not going to Google anything. The use of the ceramic on the space shuttle is different. It's just used as a heat shield. It's not coming into contact with a bunch of . Plus I doubt they would use the same ceramic on the space shuttle as they would in your idea of using it for breaks.

I had an older Silverado ¾ ton …Noisy truck, brakes squeaked, TH-400 transmission clunked, windows whistled, the very day I drove it off the dealer floor…I eventually switched to ceramic pads & the brake squeaks stopped…I am a slow driver, easy on brakes & had the truck for 21 years and never had to replace the rear drums…

Wiki-Ceramic materials - Composed of clay and porcelain bonded to copper flakes and filaments, these are a good compromise between the durability of the metal pads and the grip and fade resistance of the synthetic variety. Their principal drawback, however, is that unlike the previous three types and despite the presence of the copper (which has a high thermal conductivity), ceramic pads generally do not dissipate heat well, which can eventually cause the pads or other components of the braking system to warp. However, because the ceramic materials causes the braking sound to be elevated beyond that of human hearing, they are exceptionally quiet.

A sudden impact from stopping a falling object has far different kinetics than a smoothly applied hard pressure. Besides, they are a ceramic compound. they also use metallic fibers in them to make them robust.
