Also, there is no way that OKC doesn't change their SL IMO. Robertson is going to sit. Waiters or someone else will start.
OKC made some adjustments at the half, like you'd expect. You know they will make some before the next game. Waiters for Roberson seems like a logical choice. But if the Spurs can keep Kanter from going off like they did tonight, it's going to be hard for them to win.

Westbrook and Durant are going to do what they do next game - try to win it by themselves. Waiters for Roberson isn't going to make a of a lot of difference, with those two owning the ball. Kanter pulling down offensive boards, and getting a bunch of super-high percentage shots, playing with the second unit? That would give them some point differential.

The contrast between Pop's sparse language and Billy Donovan's loquaciousness is jarring.
It's honestly annoying at this point.

Basically, Waiters is better off playing w/ the bench unit otherwise their bench is going to get run out of the building by the "bench mob".

Morrow is a better option if they want to bench Roberson but that means Durant has to guard Kawhi.

It definitely helps the offense for OKC. But ya, if OKC doesn't solve their defensive issues (which Waiters does not do) it will still be tough. The reason the offense for OKC was bad was 3-fold: 1. Danny/Kawhi are great. 2. SA was making shots and limited OKC's bread and butter which is transition offense. 3. Spurs are too great defensively to have a non-scorer on the floor (Roberson).

That is why they will make the change (I hope they wait at least one game and it leads to another loss). But the adjustment will come next game on the defense of the PnR. That is what killed them and that is what they will change. They will either elect to hedge the ball handler really hard to change the dynamic of the PnR (cause TO's, force bad angles, or extra passes to get where they want).

It can compromise your defense if the ball handler beats it or delivers good passes and people cut/move, but it's probably what they have to try. Or they can double hard once the LMA/Kawhi catch it. That's risky too, but an option to see if SA hits. Spurs are going to get good looks this series. If they hit, they will be very tough for OKC to come.

If Russ/Durant don't put up 60, SA will be tough. Just have to control rebounding, turn overs and fouls. If they control those OKC can't win unless they just get scorching hot which is tough with Danny/Kawhi

They kept trying to sag on PnRs which left LMA wide open, they usually switch the PnR but since Adams was guarding LMA in the 1st half (instead of Ibaka) they probably planned on sagging like the 2014 Blazers.

They are a ty defensive team to hedge & recover, LMA can roll then make a pass to find a wide open corner shooter b/c they will be forced to help otherwise LMA is going to get a basket or get fouled.

They got desperate & tried playing zone but that got demolished real quick.

If they put Ibaka on LMA then switch it like the 2014 Mavs then LMA is going to murder Westbrick.

I'm just saying - Waiters won't be able to make a lot of difference if Westbrook/Durant don't put the ball in his hands. I could be wrong, but I think when those two egos are in the game, shots for others are going to be limited.

The "hard hedge". Yeah, I look for it to be a major part of the Thunder game plan next game. It's one of the things that I think the league has allowed to get out of control. Because a lot of the time, there's no PnR to hedge - they just run guys out to the top of the circle to slam into the PG as he's crossing. And, yeah, it s up passing angles, and can destroy the flow of an offense. OKC is one of the worst, and the refs have to start cracking down on it - but so far I don't see any signs of it.

I'm all for hedging the PnR, obviously. But they still have to be judged by the same rules out there as anyplace else on the court. If a guard was heading toward the basket, and you bashed into him and bounced him in a different direction, it would draw a whistle every time. But out at the circle, they act like it doesn't count. Yeah, I expect a steady diet of that in Game 2. And if Danny/Patty can't handle it, we'll see it the rest of the way.

Ill stick with Spurs in 5 after what I saw tonight. I think they take game 2, then go to OKC and split. In a couple days though, the attention will turn to Durant's last games in OKC, the media has 4 days to write stories about it after game 2 and im sure they will.

The reason why Waiters helps even with high usage from KD & WB is gravity. Spurs will have to play closer to Waiters than Roberson and that's impact. In addition to when he actually does get the ball he's more dangerous. With Roberson the Spurs literal game plan and strategy changes.

I think I even mentioned that in my thread. I don't see how, with SA defense, how a team can survive starting a non scorer. Pop murders those teams.

Obviously OKC has won a lot with Roberson and if Spurs miss shots, turn it over and get killed on the glass they can lose its just really hard.

Scott Brooks benched Thabo in Gm 3 of the 2014 series & started Reggie Jackson which led to their bench getting demolished. The Spurs lost both games at OKC b/c they were scared of Ibaka but then CoJo slayed the dragon & OKC got blown-out in Gm 5.

It will be interesting to see how good this defense is. This is a great offensive team in OKC. When the shots don't fall for SA, can they still hold OKC down? That's what I want to see, but also I'm very encouraged that this could be a breakout offensive series as well which is sick.
