Simmons can do things the other washed up or useless players can't.
Kind of like Boban, he brings skills and impacts the game in ways these other losers can't.
Kyle Anderson plays like a 40 year old 6-9 Jacque Vaughn. Kevin Martin is trash.
Simmons will be great next year and people will pretend like he gained so much in the off season or learned so much watching from the bench in a suit.

I agree he's not very good, but depending on what direction they're going ( whether Tim/Manu retire ) I could see him get his contract guaranteed. If he had more chance of being cut then they would have done it when they signed KMart and kept Butler instead. I think they chose to cut Butler because at the time they thought there was a legit chance for Simmons to be on the team next season.
Yeah, J Simmons has been saving himself until 2017. Everybody can see that. First team all-NBA, fo sho.
He will be damn thankful to stay in on the team another season keeping his spot coming off the bench.

I dunno why they'd cut him tbh. And not very good? He pretty much exceeded expectations this year. He has flaws but he's athletic and can attack the basket..things Spurs will be looking for this offseason. Why give up on him for 1M?
He still has a chance to be the first guard off the bench, but that depends a more than a few factors. He also provides athleticism that this team in general sorely needs. Needs to work on his ball handling and decision making, but I think he can scratch out a good run with the Spurs if he is willing to work.

Absolutely no way Simmons gets cut. He is a Pop guy, a journeyman. He's the next Elie, Jaren/Stephen Jackson, Bowen, Neal, Green. Pop said he's the best athlete on the team and compared his fearlessness to Ginobili, which might explain his questionable decision making. Pop also says he has a long future in the league if he puts in the work so I'll go with the man who knows more than all of us combined.
Not all players can come in and perform optimally with limited minutes. He needs 20 minutes a game in my opinion. He has to be on the court to realize his full potential.
I think he is worth a roster spot, especially at $875,000. He has a pretty good knack for getting to the rim, I am curious to see how his game would look with a reliable 3pt shot (he shot 38% but only 1/5 of his attempts were 3's).
Simmons is in the effort stage of his NBA career. This is where his energy output is disproportional to the effect he has on the game. It's done to make him appear to be better than he is. You could pull 10 random athletic guards from the D league who could do as well.
Simmons is a good bench player. He is solid. And he brings length and athleticism that we need. Some need to realize that not every player on the team is a hall of famer.
But I find it funny to see some bash Simmons and say he is terrible and that he should be cut, yet say LJC will be a solid rotation guy. Funny right?
First, I said he's more likely to get cut than be incredible. He's not very good, and coaching will only help him so much. The Spurs should go into the summer looking to upgrade their guard situation, so even if Simmons improves, he's not likely to get minutes to really show that.
However, people are overestimating his relative value. Fringe players can be had for the minimum or near enough to it every season. An extremely underrated aspect of the Spurs' potential for future success hinges on them finding the best of those fringe players and to lock them up for multiple seasons. It's not just Green. It's Green, and Mills and Baynes and Neal and Blair. , even Hill and Joseph can be added to the list. The Spurs are going to have to do whatever it takes to get those players in this off-season, which will likely be the tightest salary-wise in the team's recent history. Is Simmons one of the top 15 guys the team brings into camp? That's up in the air right now. While I think he likely is, I would be very happy if someone comes on who outshines what Jonathon has given so far. In the very least, I'd like at least one guard with more potential and a better contractual situation to be brought in.
Man if I was in Simmons shoes I would be be spending hours in the gym working on all aspects of my game. He needs to. be hanging with Kawhi and learning how a professional like Kawhi works his ass off in the summer.
It would be nice to if Green joined that group and worked on his dribble and layup. Kinda remind me when Marion joined Witten off season workouts and killed it the next season.
Yes, that would be nice for both players. Green, I think, does work on his game. He starts off every season with new parts of his game, but they fade away by the end of the season. We saw them stick with Danny Green 2.0 for the longest they ever did this past season, and I don't think it was encouraging.
Simmons has at ude problems. I don't mean that he's a bad character. I think his confidence is extremely fragile. I'm very curious to see if he can accept the coaching he may need to improve his skills. That's especially true, since he's lacking in intangibles more than anything else right now.
I was a little surprised that Simmons didnt get a little more burn in the OKC series. He could have burned his six fouls with some athletic tough defense against Westbrook since Patty was clearly too small. He does have some lapses on defense in rotations, but he kinda makes up for his lack of corporate knowledge with his energy, length and athleticism. And I wonder who OKC would put on him given he loves to drive into the paint. But that's water over the dam.
Meanwhile, I think they keep him unless they can use him in a trade. Hard to find anyone for a cheap bench rider that would be a better value at this point.
Simmons is a dirty cheap practice player whose salary will be laughable under he new CBA. He's also someone RC can package in a trade if some lotto team is interested in a cheap bench player.
Simmons/Patty for Darren Collison is something I could see happening considering the Kings had James Anderson playing starters minutes last season.
Slomo should sticky that, and we could use it as a response to about 90% of the that's going to be posted over the offseason.

Working on your own isn't the same, because you keep practicing the same things, the wrong way. Patty worked with him, but not for long enough. Simmons would benefit. But Danny should commit to the entire summer with him, if he really wants to do something to improve his game.
