Had that dude pegged the whole time. Some people just fell in love with a name.
Easily the worst player the Spurs had on the roster. Good riddance.
We had a nice little thing with Butler going, but then again it is 2016 Pop..
Bottom line, yea cutting Butler for Martin was a bad idea Pops, not only bc Martin was terrible and unable to crack the rotation, but adding him so late screwed chemistry up on top. I don't think the bench reached the playoffs playing their best at all, and part of it was the possible distraction of going so mad scientist to tend the season when the Spurs usually want to be playing their best in March and April, not their worst.
He should have been picked up by OKC TBH.![]()
As impactful as Drew Gooden.
I loved what Butler bought to the team this season and to top it off, he was a really great guy from the sounds of it. Butler's grandfather loved the Spurs and wanted/wished Butler could play for them. An article I read said that he was really happy that Butler made the team. It still doesn't sit well with me that he was cut. I just didn't like any of that situation at all.
Also, as I said before, even if Martin was added, Bonner was the one that should have been cut and moved to the front office. If that er Bonner tries to play another season and the Spurs allow it, I might be done with the team (if Tim is not back), and if it's not with the Spurs and he goes to another team, that will piss me off even more that he wasn't cut.
Eh, Bonner played well after he came back from injury. I understand him hanging on. Martin was just a dumpster fire, and really, no one should have been cut to bring him aboard.
Bonner will be back. He recently said this after the Spurs-Thunder series:
"I'm going to do everything I can do to keep playing in the NBA. The greatest job on Earth. Being able to play basketball, and do something you love and get paid for it. I'll stay in tip-top shape this summer. Come July hopefully the Spurs come calling."

^^ Yup he has said he wants to keep playing. He's fine being the 15th man in the roster.
And people say that Tony Parker fell off quickly. This dude went from a #1 option, border line all-star caliber SG (at least statistically) to a fringe NBA guard in one season. Crazy that the Spurs thought this frail, fragile, choking, Paper Tiger was going to amount to anything off the bench.
As soon as I saw that his best move was a one-handed floater/jumper inside the three - point line (when not going to the line) I knew his time in SA was going to be short.
I can honestly say I was never cool with this move, and it felt like a bad omen from the start. I had no problem keeping Bonner, but Butler should not have been cut for Martin. not sure if that was Pop or RC's decision, but it was not good. Didn't really have a problem with getting Andre Miller though.
Agreed. Cutting Butler was a TERRIBLE mistake. Should've cut Bonner or Kyle instead
It usually takes Pop a year to figure out how to use players. KMart's ability to draw fouls is really an ability the Spurs need especially for the playoffs. It keeps you in games even when shots are not falling so you don't get blown out.
THIS is what Martin was brought in for, I thought. It was telling they brought someone like that in - basically says the #1 option on spurs can't get to the line. It was Martin's only ability - so it's strange Pop didnt give him some piece to succeed. He looked like from the beginning, and didnt play in the playoffs.
That being said - who cares who was cut for Martin - OBVIOUSLY they wouldn't have played when it mattered since parker, west, anderson were getting minutes. But yep, Martin sucked.
Regular season PER
Danny Green 10.5
Kevin Martin 10.1
Playoff PER
Kyle Anderson 7.7
Kevin Martin 6.0
Worst player - yes. Easily - no
Easily yes bc both those other guys play defense Martin doesn't.
kyle anderson plays like , and he's ugly
Wasnt a huge fan of him signing, hated cutting Butler for him.
Not a stretch to say had they kept Butler they would have played Golden State.
