Chinook - to make sure I have this (mostly) right and to keep the salary situation fresh as we approach free agency - If SA doesn't waive or renounce anyone, but all 3 of West/Duncan/Gino opt out, SA should have about 10M in cap space, correct?

That would mean they have the cap holds of Bonner/Butler/Miller/Martin, Boris full salary, Simmons full salary, the draft picks (this year, plus LJC/Milu) & Boban's QO. With all the guaranteed salaries and no one waived that has SA at about 84M in salaries with a 94M cap.

With what we currently know (no speculation) this seems like the path SA is on with Manu/West already opting out. If Tim opts out (now speculating, and we will know soon) then SA should be working with 10M.

They can get to 15M by simply waiving Boris/Simmons.

If Milutinov doesn't make the team then likely his salary gets removed so that's another 1m (16M) total.

So if Tim opts out which seems likely, SA can seemingly get to 16M in cap space without needing any other teams help simply by waiving Boris/Simmons & not having Milutinov come over (possibly more if they stretch Boris).

^ pretty much. Some things though, Bobon has a Q offer of 1.5mil, which acts against the cap until he decides to sign it or not. Not sure when the date is. Murray contact is 950k. LJC cap hold of 990k. As far as I know, Spurs need to waive their rights to sign them for this year Milutinov and LJC, not sure about Bertans, for them to be erased from the cap hold.

    Edit* add

Simmons cap hold is bugger all, under 900k. Mills is owed 3.5mil. So we can create more space by packaging Diaw and Mills 10.5mil.

Well, as my boy Coach would want me to point out, the first thing you have to do in every off-season scenario is to cut Simmons.

Anyway, it's much easier to count up in cap space rather than counting down. Roster charges are tricky devils.

This is the cap situation you describe: (EDIT: I did forget the min cap holds by mistake. However, that is definitely for the best, as they serve no purpose if they aren't renounced. In that same regard I'm ignoring the cap holds for the three Spurs who had options, even though in real life, they initially keep the team over the cap.)

    Player Salary/Hold
    LaMarcus Aldridge $20,575,005.00
    Kawhi Leonard $17,638,063.00
    Tony Parker $14,445,313.00
    Danny Green $10,000,000.00
    Boris Diaw $7,000,000.00
    Tim Duncan $5,643,750.00
    Patty Mills $3,578,948.00
    Boban Marjanovic $1,500,000.00
    Kyle Anderson $1,192,080.00
    Nikola Milutinov $1,061,600.00
    Livio Jean-Charles $990,700.00
    Dejounte Murray $983,400.00
    Jonathan Simmons $874,636.00
    Total $85,483,495.00

So the Spurs actually have about $9 Million prior to a Duncan opt out. So if Tim opts out and Diaw and Simmons are waived along with Milutinov being stashed again, the cap situation looks like this:

    Player Salary/Hold
    LaMarcus Aldridge $20,575,005.00
    Kawhi Leonard $17,638,063.00
    Tony Parker $14,445,313.00
    Danny Green $10,000,000.00
    Patty Mills $3,578,948.00
    Boban Marjanovic $1,500,000.00
    Kyle Anderson $1,192,080.00
    Diaw Stretched + RC $1,143,471.00
    Livio Jean-Charles $990,700.00
    Dejounte Murray $983,400.00
    Roster Charge $543,471.00
    Roster Charge $543,471.00
    Total $73,133,922.00

So that gives the Spurs just under $21 Million to work with while still needing one functional move, which is to waive Boban's cap hold. It simply has very little utility for the Spurs in cap scenarios. The team itself should keep it until they have to get rid of it, but in reality, the hold for Boban is the Full MLE's worth of salary, as that's what it will take to match any offer. So either you earmark that much for him now or you just completely forget he's there. I tend to do that latter, but sometimes I do the former.

    Player Salary/Hold
    LaMarcus Aldridge $20,575,005.00
    Kawhi Leonard $17,638,063.00
    Tony Parker $14,445,313.00
    Danny Green $10,000,000.00
    Patty Mills $3,578,948.00
    Kyle Anderson $1,192,080.00
    Diaw Stretched + RC $1,143,471.00
    Livio Jean-Charles $990,700.00
    Dejounte Murray $983,400.00
    Roster Charge $543,471.00
    Roster Charge $543,471.00
    Roster Charge $543,471.00
    Total $72,177,393.00

So that takes the Spurs to just under $22 Million in cap space without having to get help from other teams. If the Spurs break that space up into multiple players, they actually get a bit of extra space due to the way roster charges work. So while they can't sign one player making $22 Million, they can sign two $11 Million players and still have cap space left.

    Player Salary/Hold
    LaMarcus Aldridge $20,575,005.00
    Kawhi Leonard $17,638,063.00
    Tony Parker $14,445,313.00
    Danny Green $10,000,000.00
    Patty Mills $3,578,948.00
    Kyle Anderson $1,192,080.00
    Diaw Stretched + RC $1,143,471.00
    Livio Jean-Charles $990,700.00
    Dejounte Murray $983,400.00
    Random Player A $11,000,000.00
    Random Player B $11,000,000.00
    Roster Charge $543,471.00
    Total $93,090,451.00

Or even three players averaging $7.8 Million each:

    Player Salary/Hold
    LaMarcus Aldridge $20,575,005.00
    Kawhi Leonard $17,638,063.00
    Tony Parker $14,445,313.00
    Danny Green $10,000,000.00
    Patty Mills $3,578,948.00
    Kyle Anderson $1,192,080.00
    Diaw Stretched + RC $1,143,471.00
    Livio Jean-Charles $990,700.00
    Dejounte Murray $983,400.00
    Random Player A $7,800,000.00
    Random Player B $7,800,000.00
    Random Player C $7,800,000.00
    Total $93,946,980.00

Keeping Simmons only costs $300k on the cap, so likely he's kept unless needed to help facilitate another deal or they're absolutely desperate for his space (if it's for KD or the like, you do it without thinking twice).

Don't forget that players can be added in trades so long as the Spurs don't bust through the cap in the trade. The FA pool may be shallow, but the FO is certainly putting out feelers on players on teams that are looking to shed bodies.

Did you account for Bertans in this?
Bertans would likely be at the league minimum so the roster holds account for him.

If he's tease-twitting then it would have to be Pau who just opted out today & has been publicly putting his name on the Spurs FA list.

Biyombo would be a nice get to pair him with LMA. That defense would be great. If we could upgrade or even side grade our starting pg, it would be nice end for TD/Manu/TP to come off the bench. That chemistry for 15 to 20 mins a game.

Of course, this means no Durant. And if Durant goes to Warriors, or if Thunder keep him and snagged Horford, it's mute anyway.
How would the Thunder get Horford? The don't have the money if they re-sign Durant.

For the record, I wanted Biyombo last off-season. I didn't know he was going so cheap and was pretty mad when the Raptors got him for nothing. I thought he would have been a fantastic defensive/rebounding big off the bench. Did the Spurs have the LLE last off-season? Was that used on Boban?

Thunder can package Kanter for him. Essentially if Horford wants to go to Thunder, they can get him, like Warriors can get Durant. He can play PF there with Adams, which is very enticing for him. The biggest question mark is that if Durant stays, he is likely signing a plus 1 deal, and Westbrook and Oladipo are on one year deal. So him signing a 4 year deal, he could watch all those guys walk.

They had only the room exception, which they used on Manu. Boban was signed with cap space.

I'm hoping the Spurs are considering Whiteside. Size is now the most glaring need this team has, if you consider that the PG position was addressed with the drafting of Murray. I believe Aldridge did get worn out in the OKC series because he did consistently have to play center. Whiteside is one of the few true centers in the league and is a monster on the boards and rim protection due to his great length and athleticism. He is also progressing with his post game. Considering he just turned 27 he would be a great option for the long term. With the veterans the Spurs have I'm not so concerned about his potential character issues.

A short video of Cady Lalanne. Shows his ability to rebound, block shots, shoot 3's, pass, drive, and low post moves.
