Kids in South America have better chance of being recruited to the minors than a black kid in Louisiana. The nerdy white Jewish kids I knew in high-school played Besibol but couldn't make the team in any other sport including cross-country.

I'm actually against the travel team model since it's basically a soccer-academy system in disguise, which I've spoken out against numerous times on here. But it has nothing to do with not wanting blacks to play and more to do with how good Dominican. Cuban, Venezuelan, and Japanese players have gotten over the past 2 or 3 decades, since their youth programs are far superior to ours here on average. MLB teams would LOVE American blacks to reengage with the game, and draft the next Rickey Henderson, Ozzie Smith, Barry Larkin, Bo Jackson (his first sport was always baseball), Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., etc, etc.
I don't know if that reengagement is possible, even if you promote the game in inner cities. Baseball doesn't have any connection to the "swag" and hip-hop culture like basketball does, so any inner city black kid who might choose baseball would be made fun of for playing a white sport. Also worth mentioning is that baseball is a game that needs to be taught since its learning curve is so ridiculously high. Bottom line is that black athletes w/ their fast-twitch muscles are better at Besibol than white folks with that same amount of training as proven by the Cuban sports academies.

That's re ed, since it was the MLB themselves who set up these academies in the Dominican and other such places (they didn't set one up in Cuba because of the trade embargo), countries that are filled with people of African descent. And now the MLB is highly interested in Uganda, since there's a growing baseball movement there.
Believe me, the MLB and their marketers would freaking love a Ken Griffey Jr. type of star. In the early 90's, he was neck-and-neck with MJ as the US's most popular athlete.
