U.S. Navy to name ship after gay activist Harvey Milk

The U.S. Navy will name one of its new class of oil tankers after Harvey Milk, an activist who became one of the first openly gay people to be elected to public office in the United States before his assassination in 1978, officials said on Friday.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus notified Congress that he intended to name the ship after Milk and said the entire class of six vessels would be named after civil and human rights leaders.
