Trash Surrogate Pushes Pro-Putin Line That Russia Hasn't Seized Crimea
A surrogate for Donald Trump’s campaign argued on Sunday that Russia has not seized Crimea from Ukraine, even though Vladimir Putin seized the region more than two years ago.
While discussing the GOP nominee’s recent remarks about Putin on CNN Sunday, campaign surrogate Boris Epshteyn said, “First of all, Russia did not seize Crimea.”
“We could talk about the conflict that happened between the Ukraine and Crimea, it’s an ongoing conflict, but there was no seizure by Russia. That is an incorrect statement, characterization of what happened,” he continued.
An unauthorized referendum after the Ukrainian revolution led Russia to formally annex Crimea in 2014. Putin has repeatedly insisted that Russia has no military operations in the region.

Shocking Poll Finds That GOP Convention Made Voters Less Likely To Vote For Trump
For the first time in Gallup's history, the Republican Party's convention made voters less likely to support Donald Trump.
According to Gallup:Americans are evenly divided on whether they view the Democratic Party more favorably (44%) or less favorably (42%) after the party’s national convention last week.
However, their ratings of the Republican Party after the GOP convention two weeks ago were significantly worse, with 35% saying they viewed the party more favorably and 52% less favorably.….
Gallup has asked this question about Democratic and Republican national conventions since 1984, with the exceptions of the 1984 and 1992 Republican conventions.
The 2016 Republican convention is the first after which a greater percentage of Americans have said they are “less likely” rather than “more likely” to vote for the party’s presidential nominee.

Trump Surrogate: Trump Sacrificed Two Marriages To Create Jobs!
Trump hit back over the weekend, sayingthat he's "made a lot of sacrifices," like creating jobs.
During a CNN panel discussion Sunday, Trump surrogate Scottie Nell Hughes defended Trump's comments.
"Mr. Trump was responding to the fact of sacrificing. Nowhere ever did he ever say that his sacrifice was equivalent or more or even close to what the Kahn’s had given up," she said.
CNN host Fredricka Whitfield then asked, "Is creating a job considered a sacrifice?"
"You know what, creating jobs caused him to be at work, which cost him two marriages,”Hughes said in response. “Time away from his family to sit there and invest.
Clinton surrogate Bernard Whitman jumped in to say, "infidelity cost him."
"No, actually being away from his family, he’s admitted it,” Hughes insisted. "That is the spin of the media and ongoing bias."

Powerful Koch brothers rebuff big donors' calls to back Trump for White House
The billionaire industrialist Koch brothers rejected pressure over the weekend from dozens of big donors in their sprawling political network to back U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying that their money was better spent trying to influence congressional races.
The rejection deprives Trump, a New York businessman who has never previously run for elected office, of a major source of fundraising and reflects how his unorthodox White House bid has sparked some disarray among fundraisers who would normally be squarely behind a Republican nominee.
The Kochs, with a nearly $300 million political warchest, have earned a reputation as powerful allies in Republican politics.
Charles Koch, the dominant player in his political partnership with brother David Koch, told attendees at a bi-annual donor retreat at a luxury resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado: “At this point, I can’t support either candidate” for the White House.

but Kock Bros will continue to parachute $100Ms into state, municipal, even school board elections.

Jeb had no business running IMO. He had been out of the political game for a long time, and nobody wanted another Bush anyway.
Caught in a fib, Trump hedges on debate schedule
All of which leads to questions about whether the Republican nominee may ultimately balk at the agreed upon schedule.
On “Face the Nation” yesterday, Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was asked directly whether the candidate will agree to show up for the scheduled debates. Manafort replied,
“He said he wants to participate in it, but just like we discovered in the hack of the DNC, Mrs. Clinton likes low audiences watching her debates.”
He added, “So, we’re going to sit down with the commission in the next week or so and we’re going to start talking to them.”
In other words, it sounds as if Team Trump sees the existing schedule as the starting point for negotiations – which may include recommendations for significant changes.
And if those “talks” don’t go the way the Trump campaign wants? No one can say for sure exactly what might happen at that point.
Hillary Clinton has already agreed to participate in the three scheduled debates. It’s a safe bet that if Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson qualifies, he’ll be there, too.
Trump, the first nominee to suggest without proof that the process itself is “rigged,” will soon be
confronted with a decision:
would it be worse to appear cowardly by skipping some or all of the debates, or
by showing up and doing poorly?
Or is this some kind of elaborate expectations-setting game, in which Team Trump tries to set the bar for success so low that if the GOP candidate shows up and avoids collapsing, he and his allies will declare him the winner?

Trump’s “Fact-Free” Comments On Russia's Annexation Of Crimea Roundly Condemned
Donald Trump: Putin Is “Not Going Into Ukraine. Just So You Understand, He’s Not Going Into Ukraine. All Right?”
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump appeared to admit that he would recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea, according to a Washington Post report. On July 27, Trump said “we’ll be looking at” “recogniz[ing] Crimea as Russian territory” as president.
Huffington Post’s Sam Stein: “Donald Trump Appears Either Unfamiliar With Russia’s Annexation Of Crimea Or Directly Supportive Of The Intrusion.”
Huffington Post senior politics editor Sam Stein blasted Trump’s comments on Crimea as either “ignorance of a major geopolitical crisis or favoritism to Russia’s incursion” into Ukrainian territory. From the July 31 article:
NY Times: Trump’s Comments On Crimea “Were Significant Because Mr. Trump Has Seemingly Embraced Mr. Putin.”
In an article led “Donald Trump Gives Questionable Explanation of Events in Ukraine,”The New York Times’ David Sanger and Maggie Haberman called Trump’s response “a muddled explanation of his views about the 2014 annexation of Crimea by Russia.” They wrote that it “is difficult” to discern “what [Trump] understands about the current status of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, and how it would change in a Trump administration.”
The Atlantic: Trump’s Comments Are “Likely To Spread Much Cheer Through Russia,” And “Dread In The Former Soviet Republics.”
The Atlantic senior editor Krishnadev Calamur wrote that Trump’s “response is likely to spread much cheer through Russia” and “could spread at least an equal amount of dread in the former Soviet republics.” Calamur added, “In a matter of two weeks, the man who could become the next American president has not only questioned the utility of NATO, thereby repudiating the post-World War II security consensus, he also has seemingly removed whatever fig leaf of protection from Russia the U.S. offered the post-Soviet republics and Moscow’s former allies in the Eastern bloc.”
On CBS This Morning, General Michael Hayden Called Trump’s Crimea Comments “A Fact-Free Description Of What’s Going On In The Ukraine.”
Former Director of both the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency Gen. Michael Hayden called Trump’s comments a “fact-free description of what's going on in the Ukraine." When asked if the statements make Trump “unfit and unqualified to be commander-in-chief,” Hayden responded, “That would add to a body of evidence that would actually draw one towards that conclusion.” Hayden said that Trump’s comments were “devoid of facts and divorced from traditional American and traditional European policy.”
The Daily Beast’s Michael Weiss: “Not Even China Is Willing To Recognize The Annexation Of Crimea. But Trump Is.”
BBC's Kim Ghattas: Trump’s Rhetoric About Crimea “Is Very Troubling Because … This Is The Kind Of Language That Mr. Putin Himself Has Used.”
BBC journalist Kim Ghattas called Trump’s comments on Crimea “very troubling,” adding that Trump’s rationale “is the kind of language that Mr. Putin himself has used” to justify Russia’s illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory.
CNN's Peter Beinart: "It Is Quite Likely" That Trump's "Understanding Of What Actually Happened In Ukraine Is Quite Thin."
CNN political commentator Peter Beinart pointed to the "larger context" of Trump's previous foreign policy blunders, including not knowing "what 'Brexit' meant" or "what the nuclear triad was," to suggest that "it is quite likely in fact that his understanding of what actually happened in Ukraine is quite thin."

U.S. Republican Donald Trump's presidential campaign appealed to Capitol Hill for support on Monday as his attacks on the Muslim parents of a decorated American soldier killed in Iraq drew sharp rebukes from fellow party members.
Trump's criticism of Khizr Khan and Ghazala Khan, who took the stage at last week's Democratic convention, sparked growing concern and dismay from Republican lawmakers responding to the latest Trump outburst to blindside his party colleagues.
Republican Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war and the most prominent veteran in Congress, along with the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, joined the chorus of condemnation, reflecting the highly regarded place the military and its veterans hold with many in the United States.
Trump's dispute with the Khans has dominated the White House campaign in recent days and underlined the uneasy alliance between many leading Republicans and the party's freewheeling, unorthodox nominee for the Nov. 8 election.
Rob Wasinger, a onetime congressional candidate who has been working for the Trump camp on congressional outreach, sent an email to senior Senate aides saying, "We want to get several member statements out today on this, and would really appreciate your help."
