High School Football Players Across the U.S. Join Kaepernick, Refuse to Stand for National Anthem

getting far less attention are the high school football players across the United States, who, inspired by Kaepernick, are refusing to stand during the national anthem to protest racism and inequality. Many of those leading the protests are black and brown students who have grown up with images of young people who look like them being shot and killed by police.

Coaches and most members of the South Jersey Tigers high school football team, Woodrow Wilson, knelt during the national anthem on Saturday. “I am well aware of the third verse of the national anthem which is not usually sung, and I know that the words of the song were not originally meant to include people like me," Tigers coach Preston Brown told NBC 10 on Saturday.

The third stanza states, “No refuge could save the hireling and slave/From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave."

As the Intercept's Jon Schwartz pointed out, Francis Scott Key wrote those words during the war of 1812, in direct reference to U.S. slaves who fought for the British, “who accepted everyone and pledged no one would be given back to their ‘owners.’"

Schwartz continues: “So when Key penned ‘No refuge could save the hireling and slave/From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,’

he was taking great satisfaction in the death of slaves who’d freed themselves. His perspective may have been affected by the fact he owned several slaves himself.”

Hey Marshall, for someone who wants to promote "positivity" you sure have a strange way of going about it. Why not redouble any efforts of working within the Black community to promote positive changes in education, upward advancement, cultural awareness and a goal of Black men stepping up and becoming fathers and husbands.

Native American Student’s Grade Docked for Refusing to Say Pledge of Allegiance: 'My People Risked Our Lives for Our Land, for Our Freedom'

Starting in second grade, California high school student Leilani Thomas has been refusing to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States.

    For years,
she told Sacramento ABC affiliate KXTV, she’s been quietly affirming her First Amendment right to free speech, a right encompassing the freedom to dissent, to critique the powerful, to think and act as a self-determined human being.

    Thomas is also Native American.

As such, she has expressed complex feelings regarding the United States and its flag. Until now, however, there has been no incident, no controversy, no media coverage of steadfast actions borne of personal conviction. She is not a politician stumping for vote, or a selfie star hoping to gain followers. She is a teenage girl trying to make it through the social gauntlet of high school.

And so Thomas sits during the Pledge of Allegiance recited daily at her school. She has done so for years without incident, garnering no press, and provoking no backlash from authorities. Not until this week.

“She told me I was being disrespectful and I was pretty mad,” Thomas said of her teacher at Lower Lake High School. “She was being disrespectful to me also, saying I was making bad choices, and I don’t have the choice to sit during the pledge.”

In a different interview, Thomas affirmed that

her teacher “says that it [the flag] represents the military and that they risked their lives for us…

And I always tell her, ‘Well, my people risked our lives for our land, for our freedom. For our rights’.”

The teacher punished Thomas and an unnamed friend who’d likewise refused to say the pledge, by reducing their participation grade in her class. Other schools are adopting a similarly authoritarian stance and insisting that all students pledge allegiance — or else.

But Thomas’ teacher was wrong on two counts.

The flag does not represent the military, and

Thomas does have the choice, as well as the right, to sit during the pledge.

I think you need to look up what the word criminalizing means.

Truth. A disabled black man was killed in his car while reading a book. This is why kaepernick protested. The main ones telling him to shut up haven't done nor said a word to help prevent police brutality. A bunch of fake Patriots.

No book was found, but a gun was.

But Kaepernick's protests aren't hurting anyone. I'd rather people do that than burn, loot, or throw bricks.

Charlotte is an open carry state.

What have you done to support the prevention of police brutality and systematic racism

    Not truth. Cmon man

Tulsa was bad for sure, but coming out of your car armed and not putting the weapon down when repeatedly ordered to? And your open carry argument is weak as well, plenty of idiots both white and black do it every day and don't get shot.

You need to step up your race baiting game, this was weak.

do you have proof of all of that other than the officers word? sorry but i've seen too many cases of police planting evidence and flat out lying on suspects. i don't believe anything they say. like i said, its an open carry state and its always us blacks who own guns legally that get gunned down. philando, john crawford and now keith scott(who was waiting for his son to get off a school bus).

its a shame we can't practice our 2nd amendment rights in peace. cops see us with guns and assume the worst and kill us. and salute to that brotha who called you white devils out...its the truth. y'all love our culture but dont love or care about us or the issues we face, very devilish behavior indeed.
