The original draft of the bylaw named four breeds collectively known as pit bulls, but the amendment passed on Tuesday creates special regulations for three breeds: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, and the Staffordshire terrier, along with crossbreeds of those dogs or share their physical characteristics.

So I guess they can just pick and choose which dogs they want to take from people. ing stupid.

Great idea as far as pit bulls go.

Myth #1: It's the owner not the breed

The outdated debate, "It's the owner, not the breed," has caused the pit bull problem to grow into a 30-year old problem.1 Designed to protect pit bull breeders and owners, the slogan ignores the genetic history of the breed and blames these horrific maulings -- inflicted by the pit bull's genetic "hold and shake" bite style -- on environmental factors. While environment plays a role in a pit bull's behavior, it is genetics that leaves pit bull victims with permanent and disfiguring injuries.
The pit bull's genetic traits are not in dispute. Many appellate courts agree that pit bulls pose a significant danger to society and can be regulated accordingly. Some of the genetic traits courts have identified include: unpredictability of aggression, tenacity ("gameness" the refusal to give up a fight), high pain tolerance and the pit bull's "hold and shake" bite style.2 According to forensic medical studies, similar injuries have only been found elsewhere on victims of shark attacks.3
Purveyors of this myth also cannot account for the many instances in which pit bull owners and their family members are victimized by their pet dogs. From 2005 to 2015, pit bulls killed 232 Americans, about one citizen every 17 days. Of these deaths, 51% involved a family member and a household pit bull.4 Notably, in the first 8 months of 2011, nearly half of those killed by a pit bull was its owner. One victim was an "avid supporter" of Bad Rap, a recipient of Michael Vick's dogs.

I'm not afraid of dogs generally, but would be very concerned if I looked across the street and saw a pit bull eyeing me. And seeing a pit roaming the streets does get your attention unlike any other dog.

    2015 dog bite fatality statistics

    • 34 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2015. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 82% (28) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6.6% of the total U.S. dog population.2

I've thought quite a bit about what I would do if a dog attacked me. I think most people would freak out and not think through the correct technique. It's far different if a person attacks another person. Being human, we inherently understand how the body works and how an attacker would...attack. However, a dog...not many of us have had any practice fighting a dog. But the first step would be to realize that a dog is basically just a person coming at you on his hands and feet. Any basic level martial arts student should be able to neutralize an attacking dog.

The problem with the Pit Bull is that the margin for error is very small. If you were off target on trying to execute a spin kick on a Collie, even a glancing blow would be enough to stun the dog and give you an advantage. With a Pit Bull, anything less than a perfectly landed blow...then he has the advantage.

This is one of the biggest controversies surrounding this law, tbh..the outrage has been pretty severe..

Ontario has a strong anti-pitbull stigma, but Quebec is even worse..one of my good friends has a ing boxer mix with no pitbull in him(he kind of looks like one, though), and she was approached by Quebec officers while she was just walking in Montreal

I carry a gravity knife (ya just flick it open) with a six inch blade. And being a big strong guy (just being factual) I don't give a dog much of a chance to be honest. No way I;m trying to wrestle here, I'd kick and swing/stab with my blade, and something is going to land.

What happens is most people can't match the viciousness a dog brings, I don't have that problem. We are usually bigger and stronger.

I don't think you could rely on the knife. Dogs are extremely adept at targeting something with their mouths. If they see the knife, that's exactly what they'll go after. And even if you connect, it would take a few seconds for them to feel the pain and back off. A Pit might not back off anyway. If you're strong, taking a dog to the ground might be your best way. While some dogs have powerful jaws and neck muscles, most don't have the leg strength to grapple with a human. And certainly no ability to grip something and hold with their paws.

If it did develop into a ground game, I'd be pretty comfortable knowing that I could probably get the dogs back and either subdue him or break his neck.

My girlfriend began working at the SPCA last year, she makes the decisions on euthanasia(along with doing it herself), and I've heard some serious horror stories involving the breed, tbh..obviously it's mostly owner-related and the way they were raised, but actually seeing the damage up close and dealing with the results of a poorly raised pitty gives you a different perspective..

Of course the same criteria could be applied to other breeds( ty owners), but this breed tends to attract some of the trashiest in our society, sadly(although I know plenty o pitts with great owners)..

    True story...

A guy is in the park making love to a child when a Pit Bull starts running at them. The guy starts to run away. Another guy in a tree yells at the first guy and says, "man, you can't out run a pit bull". The first guy yells back, "I don't have to. I just need to outrun a child".

Twice in my life (both in the insurance biz) I've been attack by dogs (just muts) both times all it took was a strong kick and there they went welping. Yes, those I was calling on didn't appreciate that but they understood.

You hurt a dog and give them some space to run I think most will.

I've never been attacked by a dog. But I've practiced what I would do several times. I'll change my approach based on the breed. With most dogs, I'd drop to the ground to get on their level and then get them into a full nelson. My preference is to subdue the animal with minimal damage done.

goty ordinance in a goty country, it's to be expected.

Chihuahuas are far more aggressive, I've been attacked by the little annoying pricks far more than any other animal.

wife....what a great idea, who would have thought of training to fight dogs?
    SFS...I know.
wife...maybe you should open up a dog fighters training camp.
    SFS...I might just do that.
wife....have you ever been attack by a dog?
    SFS...no, not yet.
wife...so how do you know what will and won't work?
    SFS....hmmmm? Good point.
wife....ya might wanna start a few fights with dogs, just to get the feel for it.

my gf has a lab/pitbull, but luckily his paperwork just says "lab mix" so if LA passes a local ordinance like this, they could probably keep him, unless they have that vague "similar characteristics" clause.

her dog is a total sweetheart tbh, acts like a big baby

i agree that its on the owners. but a poorly trained pitbull could be lethal. a poorly trained golden retriever wouldn't. the risk and potential carnage with a pit is significantly higher, even if the fault is on the owner...

Against a pit with bad intentions you would just end up falling on your ass and then you'd be at his mercy. Better technique for you would be to offer up your belly to the pit, then once he has locked on to that chunk of blubber you could use the knife on him.
