Just when you're about to give up on the lad, he comes through with a near perfect game.
This is everything I ever saw in Simmons, he did it tonight.

Last few minutes of the 4th quarter before his monster dunk to end the game, Simmons started to press too much and made about 4 bad plays in a row. He has to control that impulsive hero ball thing. But he has a lot of tools and is improving all the time IMO. With Patty and Manu off the bench he can bring the lightning, the energy, and the good defense to this year's team. Good to see him do so well.

Absolutely, this was the first game he really played within himself and within the offense. Late in the game he flashed the usual "stuff" and it got him in trouble a couple of times. I hope The coaching staff spends a lot of time showing him the stark contrast within this single game. Playing under control, Simmons could really shine - and help the Spurs, big time!

Yeah he has the physical skills just needs to get his mind on straight. Can't have a bad game and hang your head you got to be mentally tough and play through it. I am really happy he had a great game and wish him more with Green being out I think this is the time he can gain that confidence and yes I like him at SG more then Anderson.
Pop has A LOT more patience when it comes to players who have shown potential than we think. Asked about Simmons:

I remember Pop stating that Forbes was too young and inexperienced to say that he's a "pure shooter." (he's 23 and older than Anderson for reference here). I posted that in "the loaded magazine". How far can Forbes expand his game, or whether he even survives the entire season without being traded or waived due to the team's need to shore up some other spot, remains to be seen, but I do find insight in many statements Pop makes concerning the young players when he's not being purposefully cryptic.Thanks for the quote. Something else he had said, this time a few years ago about a young Kawhi: that not everybody had the ability to learn (and Kawhi obviously had that)... so it's interesting to watch these guys learn... Sharing these tidbits is part of what makes my post count so high TBH.

I do believe Pop is referring to NBA experience in youth, not age. Age has little relation when progression is concerned. Pop refers to Simmons as a young guy, and so does Kawhi, even though Simmons is older than Kawhi. It's an experience thing, and in that regard these guys are all green, Simmons probably being the greenest in terms of experience as he has never had a high level of coaching or legitimate compe ion before the spurs. Forbes came from SMU, and while they're certainly not the worst program around, they compete at a much lower level.

Michigan state, and Cleveland state for Forbes. I'm watching too much college football lately.
Unfortunately, College Football is better than the Spurs tonight...Simmons isn't exactly the least experienced, although the most journeyed, IMHO. He played at UH and spent two seasons with Austin. Incidentally, he also payed JUCO ball in Midland, Texas. Back in the day, they won a JUCO National Championship with three great guards: Spud Webb, Mookie Blaylock and (actually the best JUCO player of the 3) Ricky Grace. You probably know Spud and Mookie...
