If Comey had said something about an ongoing investigation of Trump, it would be condemned as rank political interference. HRC's supporters are not amiss to take it similarly.

This is different. Even CNN is forced to cover this ad nauseum.
IMO, networks are desperate to make this race appear close.

When this broke, they were fawning all over themselves and then more infomation came out that this wasn't about Hillary's emails or server or even from her and they backpedalled a little. Just to a few hours later start pedalling that somehow Hillary is the main target here when the investigation is focus on Anthony Wiener.

I'll be looking forward to Comey doing a presser tomorrow. There's no way he can leave this hanging for 10 days like this.

Comey was foolish to say anything so close to the election. There's little chance the investigation -- if it is that -- will be wrapped up before Nov. 8.
He told congress it was done
He had to tell congress it was not

    The story ran its course.

It almost forces the FBI to make something out of it. If it's a bunch of emails that have already been leaked, and are
duck-like worthless, the FBI is just gonna say never mind? It was much to do about nothing? Sorry about the timing? Investigation closed again...

This is very strange as it stands right now. Republicans are even questioning the timing.

Its a non-story about Anthony freaking Wiener. When I saw his name related to the email I totally blew it off. Networks just trying to have any kind of excuse to claim why the polls are maybe drawing closer. Mark it down they will have them "statically tied" Nov 6th, watch.

    No, he didn't.

The FBI disclosing information about ongoing investigations -- or for that matter releasing investigative material to the public afterwards -- basically never happens unless James Comey makes an exception for Hilary Clinton.

What is significant is that the FBI has reopened the investigation 11 days before a presidential election. This is definitely news. The way the networks use it for polling is another story..

Is that what happened? It's not clear to me that threshold has been crossed.

Are "appropriate investigative steps" the same thing as a criminal investigation? Just guessing, some kind of preliminary investigation has to occur.

CNN caving under Trumpanzee pressure, tbh.

They always air full Trump rallies, invite paid under the table Trump surrogates like Lewandowski, show a map in Hillary's favor and ask the panel what Trump has to do to win.... add completely blowing this out of proportion

Gotta make it look close, I guess.

There is no indication the emails in question were withheld by Clinton during the investigation, the law enforcement official told Newsweek, nor does the discovery suggest she did anything illegal. Also, none of the emails were to or from Clinton, the official said. Moreover, despite the widespread claims in the media that this development had prompted the FBI to “reopen” of the case, it did not; such investigations are never actually closed, and it is common for law enforcement to discover new information that needs to be examined.

Apparently it was never closed to begin with, and if this just had to do with Adedin or Weiner Comey would not have needed to write his letter to congress. Whatever they found has to do with Clinton, and it's got to be something big for Comey to come out with it this close to the election. No way he risks tarnishing the FBI further if what they discovered was a dud.

Justice officials warned FBI that Comey’s decision to update Congress was not consistent with department policy

Comey told Justice Department officials that he intended to inform lawmakers of newly discovered emails. These officials told him the department’s position “that

we don’t comment on an ongoing investigation. And

we don’t take steps that will be viewed as influencing an election,”

    said one Justice Department official

Comey made an independent decision to alert the Hill. He is operating independently of the Justice Department. And he knows it.”

Comey decided to inform Congress that he would look again into Hillary Clinton’s handling of emails during her time as secretary of state for two main reasons: a sense of obligation to lawmakers and a concern that word of the new email discovery would leak to the media and raise questions of a coverup

It placed Comey again at the center of a highly partisan argument over whether the nation’s top law enforcement agency was unfairly influencing the campaign.

“Of course, we don’t ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record,” Comey wrote
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...t-draw7&wpmm=1

yes, yes, Comey's "obligation to the American people", esp the Repug.

COMEY PRAISES BRAVE F.B.I. AGENTS WHO HAD TO TOUCH ANTHONY WEINER’S COMPUTER

WASHINGTON — James Comey, the embattled director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, presided over a special ceremony on Friday evening to commend the brave F.B.I. agents who had to touch Anthony Weiner’s computer.

In awarding the commendations to the agents, whom Comey called “the bravest men and women this country has to offer,” the F.B.I. director criticized the political uproar that he said had overshadowed “their selfless acts of heroism.”

“These agents have performed far and beyond the call of duty,” a visibly angry Comey said. “I know we’re eleven days away from an election and tensions are running high, but we shouldn’t let that subtract in any way from

what these brave agents did with their own hands.”

“Who among us could look at ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘I have what it takes to touch Anthony Weiner’s computer’?”

Comey asked. “I know I sure as couldn’t.”

Harland Dorrinson, one of the agents who received the official commendation, acknowledged that touching Weiner’s computer was “the toughest mission I’ve been on” since signing up with the F.B.I.

“I spent two weeks undercover in El Chapo’s drug cartel, and this was much scarier,” he said.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates objected to FBI Director James Comey's decision to notify Congress about his bureau's review of emails related to Hillary Clinton's personal server, law enforcement officials familiar with the discussion said.

Comey decided to disregard their objections and sent the letter Friday anyway,

FBI sources tell WSJ that emails may be from an account that has already been investigated

Many of the emails were discovered on a laptop used by both Ms. Abedin and Mr. Weiner, according to people familiar with the matter. In searching the laptop, investigators found thousands of emails, and they determined earlier this week that some of the emails involved Ms. Abedin discussing work issues. Ms. Abedin was questioned earlier this year by the FBI in the Clinton email probe.

Authorities haven’t yet determined how many emails involved work, or if any of those included classified information, these people said.

They also haven’t determined if the work emails in question are copies of messages already reviewed by the FBI.

It’s not that “Jim Comey is an apolitical straight shooter,” as every talking head is eager to tell you.

    It’s that
Jim Comey is very concerned that he be seen as an apolitical straight shooter.

Because of that, he has, repeatedly, put preservation of his own reputation ahead of both justice and the good of the nation.

From his ludicrous, finger-wagging press gaggle in announcing Clinton’s innocence, to his ham-fisted intrusion into the final act of
the election, Comey has felt compelled to insert Jim Comey, straight-shooter, into every moment.

As a result he’s caused serious harm to the FBI, to the election, and to the nation.

And, just incidentally, he’s ruined his reputation in the process.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/1...ng-thing-again

maybe he ruined his rep as an FBI director, but his future is bright and wealthy.

The VRWC will take good care of him.
