The EC exists because we are a union of STATES. It was the great compromise (just like the house/senate) so that less populated stated didn't end up getting completely ruled by the urban states. The US would have never existed without it.

Either way it was a very close election and both candidates understood the electoral process and fashioned campaigns to try and win.
