What a misleading nickname..sure duncan had great fundamentals but rookie to 07 duncan was a dominant physical force that very few can match against with.
He also happens to be the most skilled bigman in the league during the 2002-2007 days..an no it wasnt rasheed wallace.or whatever the media had you believe...Some of the shots he used to make in awkward angles, his ability to skillyfully position himself etc.
Crazy how no one talks about how dominant he was physically and Skillwise. Always some boring Great system player, team player, funaentals etc.

Duncan was given that nickname by Shaq at a time when Shaq had no les and was very jealous.
It was meant to be an underhanded compliment.
Shaq prided himself on the fact that he was physically dominant and flashy and wanted to emphasize that Duncan was none of those things (despite his le).
So Shaq gave himself the nickname "the Big Aristotle." Riffing on that nickname, he called TD "the Big Fundamental."
No, he's saying Tim wasn't respected ENOUGH. Key distinction.
Those pivot moves. The incredibly soft hands. Lower body strength for superior positioning. Timing on rebounding and shot blocking.

David didn't miss them, that's for sure.
He just had to wait until they showed up in another body.
If you watch the '99 Finals again you realised he was just ready to roll straight away. Banking jumpers, hooks, reverse pivots, drop steps while being a very good post defender and outstanding help defender. He was the best player in the NBA in his 2nd season.
