Red State Voters Want Democrats to Block Trash's Agenda

    A new poll finds

majorities in red and purple states who want their Democratic senators to be a "check and balance"

    to Republican President-elect Donald Trump.

The poll, conducted for the progressive Center for American Progress and published by The Washington Post, found that between 56 percent and 61 percent of voters in those states want their Democratic senator to be a "check and balance" to Trump.

"Even in states that Trump won handily, Democrats are in a good position," the organization's president, Neera Tanden, told the newspaper.

"Eight years ago, if you asked this question, people were much more inclined to say that everyone should get along. Here,

you've got people who voted for Trump but want Democrats to block or oppose his agenda.

That seems to be a new thing for American politics."

When asked if they would "replace Medicare with private insurance for seniors that costs two thousand dollars more per year on average," 77 percent of respondents said "no."

Seventy-two percent said they would not "cut funding for Medicaid, which states use to provide health coverage for low-income individuals and for nursing home care for seniors and the disabled."

Tanden noted the "big cleavage in the coalition that voted for Trump."

    "He won traditional Republicans, but

his victory margin came from people who didn't vote Republican before and don't support the party now. That's unique,"

    she said. "It also

suggests that the election was not a mandate for a right-wing agenda,

and right now, Trump's misreading that with his Cabinet picks."

How funding Donald Trump’s border wall could go south real quickly for Republicans

Trump has estimated his wall would cost $8 billion. The Post's team of nonpartisan fact checkers concluded that's an extraordinarily low number; it would likely cost $2 billion for just the raw materials. No one has exact figures, but one top construction analyst told our fact-checkers the entire wall could cost $25 billion.

Budget experts say it's not clear where money like that would come from right now.

You could technically take money from already appropriated border security funds to pay for the wall, but those funds are nowhere near enough:

The government is spending an estimated $4 billion a year on border security.

And we should note a 2013 proposal that suggested spending $46 billion on border security over the next decade failed to pass Congress.

Republicans could raise taxes to pay for it — but that would put them in the awkward position of asking the American taxpayers to contribute more money for a border wall Trump has promised they wouldn't have to pay for.

How to Know What Donald Trump Really
Cares About: Look at What He’s Insulting

Over the last 11 months, my colleague Jasmine C. Lee and I have read, tagged and sorted more than 14,000 tweets. We’ve found that about one in every nine was an insult of some kind.

has helped reveal a clear pattern – one that has not changed much in the weeks since Mr. Trump’s victory.

First, Mr. Trump likes to identify a couple of chief enemies and attack them until they are no longer threatening enough to interest him. He hurls insults at these foils relentlessly, for sustained periods – weeks or months. Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton have all held Mr. Trump’s attention in this way; nearly one in every three insults in the last two years has been directed at them.

If Mr. Trump continues to use Twitter as president the way he did as a candidate, we may see new chief antagonists: probably Democratic leaders, perhaps Republican leaders in Congress and possibly even foreign countries and their leaders. For now, the news media – like CNN and The New York Times – is starting to fill that role. The chart at the top of this page illustrates this story very clearly.

Second, there’s a nearly constant stream of insults in the background directed at a wider range of subjects. These insults can be a response to a news event, unfavorable media coverage or criticism, or they can simply be a random thought. These subjects receive short bursts of attention, and inevitably Mr. Trump turns to other things in a day or two. Mr. Trump’s brief feuds with Macy’s, Elizabeth Warren, John McCain and The New Hampshire Union Leader fit this bucket well. The election has not changed this pattern either.

The charts below show these bursts for the 50 people, places or things Mr. Trump has targeted most.

Mr. Trump frequently insulted journalists and media organizations even before he was a serious presidential candidate. Early on, Mr. Trump focused on conservative publications and commentators who stood against him: Bill Kristol, George Will, Glenn Beck, Charles Krauthammer, Stuart Stevens.

As the campaign progressed and media scrutiny increased, Mr. Trump focused on the larger news organizations and the national press, particularly after coverage critical of him. One particularly big insult campaign began in the days after a New York Times article about his behavior toward women.

‘Follow the money’: Robert Reich explains exactly why Trump won’t condemn Russia

the former labor secretary said that not only did the Russians influence the election, but Trump’s deep financial ties to the country — along with those of his close aides — will dictate how his administration deals with Russia no matter what it may cost the U.S.

Reich began by noting that Trump came to the defense of Russia less than 24 hours after intelligence officials explicitly told him that Russian President Vladimir Putin directed his people to influence the election.

“Over the years, Russian oligarchs, friends of Putin, have financed Trump’s projects and lent billions of dollars to Trump’s enterprises.

In 2008, Donald Trump Jr., told a real estate conference

‘Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,’ and continued, ‘we see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.’”

“Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, a longtime consultant to Viktor Yanukovich, the Russian-backed president of Ukraine who was overthrown in 2014, has done multi-million-dollar business deals with Russian oligarchs.

Also: Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, CEO of ExxonMobil, came up through the ranks at Exxon by managing the company’s Russia account.”

Trump’s Tweets Are a New Form of Governing by Edict

Trump’s tweets are a new form of governing by edict. They’re tweedicts.

Incoming White House press secretary Sean er says “Whatever he tweets, he is going to drive the news.”

That’s the problem. In driving the news, Trump’s tweedicts gain the power of implied threats – that he’ll, for example,

    sanction a particular company (Ford, General Motors, Carrier, or Boeing);

unilaterally alter foreign policy (recognize Taiwan,

encourage Israel to expand on the West Bank,

    not back NATO against Russian aggression);

    unleash his angry followers on a particular critic (a local union leader in Michigan, a teenage girl in New Hampshire, a TV news host);

cause customers or readers to boycott a media outlet (CNN, the Arizona Republican, Saturday Night Live, the cast of Hamilton); or

impose high political costs on Republican members of Congress (for pursuing an investigation against Russia, gutting an ethics office).

The United States is supposed to be a government of laws, not of edicts.

Yet Trump’s tweets are gaining power even though they aren’t legislation.

They aren’t executive orders (which can be reviewed and overturned by courts).

They aren’t even the statements of a president using his “bully pulpit” to make a general point, because they single out particular companies and people.

They are arbitrary and capricious, reflecting the daily whims of Donald Trump. man on the can

The media argue that the thoughts of a president-elect are “inherently newsworthy.”

    Rubbish.

They’re newsworthy only because they drive the news.

And they drive the news only because they’re considered by the media to be newsworthy.

That tautology can turn into a vicious cycle leading to tyranny.

The media should pay less attention what Trump is tweeting and more attention to what Trump is actually doing.

Donald Trump’s Twitter Account Is A Security Disaster Waiting To Happen

With no known special security protections, realDonaldTrump could be exploited for financial gain, to cause geopolitical instability, or worse.

    Donald J. Trump
    &#10004 realDonaldTrump

My Twitter has been seriously hacked--- and we are looking for the perpetrators.
    11:00 AM - 21 Feb 2013

Trump’s newfound influence — combined with the unpredictability of his tweets — makes the president-elect’s account a particularly tempting target for hackers.

That’s especially true because there is a large fortune that could be made in a single 140-character message.

If someone were able to gain access to Trump’s Twitter, they could tweet approvingly or disapprovingly about a company (as Trump has done) and play the stock market accordingly — or cause others to do so.

A market-tracking app called Trigger has already set up an alert that responds whenever Trump tweets about publicly traded companies.

If the hacker were geopolitically motivated, they could tweet favorably or unfavorably about a country or a leader (as Trump has done) and alter foreign affairs.

Or if the hacker had a grudge, they could call their enemy out in a tweet (as Trump has done) and unleash the rage of Trump’s nearly 19 million followers.

Plus, who knows what’s in Trump’s DMs?

And precisely because the president-elect’s tweets are so far afield of current president Barack Obama’s on-message, workshopped ones, someone with improper access to Trump’s account could accomplish their goals while staying in character as Trump.

(A hack of the Associated Press Twitter account in 2013 that falsely asserted breaking news about an explosion at the White House caused the Dow to drop 150 points.)
