The best defender we have for Spurs Killer Abaka
That video is hilarious. Enjoy your retirement, Matt.
As a Gators fan and Spurs fan, I always had love for Bonner. Great glue guy and a Spur through and through. Enjoy your retirement, Matt!
Now get to the Front office!
God bless Mathew 'Red Rocket/Matty Ice/Red Mamba' Bonner.
Easily the most memorable Spur of the Big Two era after the great Timothy Duncan and the great Emmanuel Ginobili, tbh.![]()
I wish he would replace Monaco.
I was already a fan of Bonner but when I saw how much he pissed off ST I liked him even more.
Obviously it would've been better if Pop gave him a shorter leash, same with Parker, but that's Pop. Best of luck on retirement to one of the most underrated Spurs.
Have nothing but love for Matty. He was fine in his role after 2012. And the Spurs had many other problems when he was starting for them so I can't hate. Hopefully he joins Sean at some point and calls games. They would be a great duo.
Thought Pop was saving that last roster spot for BonBon. Still hope to see him in the organization though as a vid editor
EDIT: Didnt see that he's going to work as a studio analyst for the Spurs

Hmm. That's interesting. Who else thinks he would have been long gone if he was black? I still have no idea why he stuck around so long.
Why? He was a very, very average player. Why have an appreciation night?
Matt coming back as part of analyst crew!
Looking at averages doesn't say much when considering a highly specialized player. There's one thing he knew how to do well and he really excelled at it. So yeah his numbers are rather average (basically a 6 & 3 roleplayer) but he was a sharpshooter and and there's no denying that. In this sense a guy who managed to finish a season with the best 3P% in the league can't be that average. He's ranked #14 all-time in 3P%. Let's not confuse one-dimensional and average.
I really loved his retirement video, it seems in line with who he is. He did his job well, it's not his fault if Pop was overplaying him and making him a starter. He has a great personality, was a fan favorite and definitely deserves an appreciation night in my book.
Being one-dimensional pretty much does make you average at best, especially if you're an unathletic, slow big man with awkward movement. Even his shooting stroke was flawed because his release point was in front of his body, which many cited as the reason why he wasn't effective in the playoffs when defenders close out on shooters faster.
He was a smart player, I'll give him that. He probably knew and executed plays in textbook fashion. Unfortunately, the NBA is a game of athleticism and versatility. Matt would be a legend in other leagues, perhaps, but he was a below-average NBA player.

He's the most 'overrated' underrated Spur of all time.
My white brotha from anotha motha. I've always liked the Red Mamba!!! He got that name from 1 the greatest from my generation. Kobe, I don't recall him giving anyone else a nic name. That says alot. So all the hate, Older Spurs you should know better, an young spurs fans show some respeck! Even if the Spurs don't retire his jersey, I will in my house. I have 1 an it will go up!
Great video. Going out with style.
Matt helped define, validate and prove a position, that virtually all teams now use, which is more than most players have achieved in their careers.
Amazing news that he's joining the Spurs broadcast. He'll fit in great.
Righteous Dude
No drama
Always ready
Always made the effort
All the best, Red Rocket
Great guy, a good teammate and a pretty damn good player too all things considered. The video is a classic. Thanks for the effort Matt and good luck in the future.
