The controversial education secretary was eventually able to get into the building, after she was confronted by protesters at a DC school on Friday
After a man threw himself in front of a staircase leading into the school, DeVos was forced return to her car, a small number of protesters chasing after her. One held a “Black Lives Matter” sign and chanted repeatedly, “Shame!”
A small number of protesters also greeted DeVos on her first day of work at the Education Department on Wednesday, holding signs that read “Resist” and chanting, “Welcome to your first day, we will not go away.”

Andy Puzder’s Hometown Paper Says He’s ‘Uniquely Unqualified’ to Be Labor Secretary
In an editorial in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Puzder was described as a misogynist who is not prepared to head up the Labor Department.
He is brash, outspoken, misogynistic, combative and uninterested in quarantining himself from his financial interests.
Like many of Trump’s nominees —
Rick Perry at the Energy Department, Betsy DeVos at Education, Ben Carson at Housing and Urban Development —
he is almost uniquely unqualified for the duties of the office to which he seeks confirmation.
Puzder perviously worked as a trial lawyer in St. Louis before heading up CKE Restaurants, which runs the Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. fast-food restaurants. CKE is currently headquartered in St. Louis but is soon moving to Nashville.
At the end of the editorial, Puzder was taken to task over hiring an undo ented worker as a housekeeper, as well as for the company’s risque commercials.
Add this to the fact that he hired an undo ented immigrant as a housekeeper and
reveled in TV commercials featuring bikini-clad supermodels
pitching 1,000-calorie burgers to his testosterone-crazed target demographic.
And, like Trump, he has balked until this week at divesting his assets.
There’s every reason for the committee to send him back to Nashville. A robot would be better

Nurses: Puzder Nomination a Direct Assault on Women, Workers
“Andrew Porter’s career is a testimony to the worst behavior of corporate America –
the sexual objectification of women,
an utter contempt of workers, and
disdain for the most basic protections for workplace rights and safety,”
said NNU Co-President Deborah Burger, RN.
“It is hard to imagine a worse and more insulting candidate to head a federal agency whose primary role is to advance the welfare of working people,” said Burger.
“There can be no other conclusion than that Puzder was specifically chosen to subvert the intent of the Labor Department, and roll back every existing standard that defends working people in America,”
Burger said. “In every regard, Puzder’s nomination directly parallels the nomination of, in particular, Scott Pruitt to administer the Environmental Protection Agency, who apparently was also chosen to destroy the intent of an agency he was named to head for the benefit of corporate profits.”
“As an organization of predominantly women, NNU is particularly appalled at the nomination of Puzder,
a man whose view of women is to view them solely as sex objects to sell hamburgers,
to be subject to the most crass sexual harassment in the workplace, and
as workers to be thrown aside and replaced by machines if they stand up for their rights,”
RN cited Puzder’s record as CEO of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s (CKE) restaurants as
a staunch opponent of raising the minimum wage,
fostering a hostile work environment for women employees,
opposition to overtime pay, and
rampant labor law violations, including wage theft.
Examples include sexual harassment complaints by two thirds of women workers at brands owned by CKE restaurants,
well above the 40 percent at similar workplaces, and do ented labor law violations at 60 percent of Department of Labor CKE investigations.
One recent survey by the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United indicated that one-third of all respondents said
they did not receive meal breaks as mandated by law;
around one-fourth had been illegally forced to work off the clock without pay;
almost one-third had been illegally deprived of overtime pay, the NNU letter noted.
Puzder’s arrogant scorn for workers, especially the most low wage workers employed in his restaurants, is evident in a history of public statements, such as
“No more people behind the counter unless they have all their teeth,” and
“How do you pay somebody $15 an hour to scoop ice cream?”
As well as his advocacy for eliminating workers and replacing them with machines because “they're always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there's never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex, or race discrimination case.”
“The mission of the Department of Labor,” Burger and Ross wrote, “is ‘to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.’
Throughout his career … Andrew Puzder has consistently failed to show regard for the principles of the Department of Labor.”
“It is deplorable to imagine Puzder in the same role once held by the first woman to hold a Cabinet position in the U.S., Frances Perkins, who as Franklin Roosevelt’s Labor Secretary was both a role model for women and a uncompromised champion of the rights and economic security for all working people,” Burger noted.
“There can be little doubt,” said Burger, “that as Labor Secretary,
Puzder would be a champion, not of workers, but accelerating corporate profits at workers’ expenses.
NNU will vigorously oppose his confirmation,” Burger concluded.

Pfeiffer was asked about Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway’s latest ethics flub and her claim that the president supports her “100 percent.” Burnet revealed that there are now reports that the president is upset with Conway.
Pfeiffer explained that this is just another in a long line of “alternative facts” from Conway that hurt her credibility.
Burnet brought up the leaks that are coming out of the White House and that there seem to be factions forming that are fighting amongst themselves. Pfeiffer agreed with the assessment and also that it is unhealthy for a White House.
“Look, I’ve been in Washington a long time, I’ve watched a lot of White Houses, I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening here,” he said.

Trump labor nominee Puzder owes millions to bank seeking waiver from his department
President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the U.S. Department of Labor personally owes millions of dollars to a convicted bank that is relying on the same department to waive sanctions for its crimes, according to federal records.
The ties between Trump’s embattled appointee Andrew Puzder and the multinational bank UBS were listed in federal do ents reviewed by International Business Times—but they were not explicitly acknowledged in Puzder’s ethics agreement with federal regulators.
Puzder listed two mortgages and one line of credit with UBS Financial Services, an investment in UBS Dynamic Alpha Fund and 10 other accounts with UBS. In all, Puzder listed a total of $2.6 million to $11.5 million of investments and loans with UBS. That is in addition to the millions of dollars of assets in the 10 other UBS accounts held by Puzder.
In 2009, UBS admitted to the Justice Department that it had “participated in a scheme to defraud the United States” by helping customers evade taxes. In 2015, UBS plead guilty to manipulating interest rates in violation of a previous deferred prosecution agreement.
The case—in which prosecutors determined the bank engaged in “deceptive currency trading and sales practices”—could trigger federal prohibitions designed to prevent convicted banks from managing billions of dollars of workers’ pension money.
But if Puzder’s nomination is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he would head a Labor Department empowered to waive such punishments.
The Department of Labor notes that the Secretary of Labor is the federal official who decides whether to grant companies the key designation—and waivers —they require to manage retirement assets.
