Both parties are going through big changes. The tea party movement when it first started was really not party oriented. Republicans usurped power and now they got a problem. Even if there was one super dominant party it would split.

This is somewhat true. The reason I wanted Trump was because I thought he would speed along realignment of the GOP, never thought he was going to win. Now they find themselves unexpectedly in full power and they have to figure out what to do with it. I think Trump's biggest battles will be within the GOP.
Democrats are way behind the curve because they thought they were winning when they were actually losing the whole time. Moderates were basically purged from the party under Obama. At the moment it looks like all they can think to do is cater to their most loyal base because that's what they think the TEA party was for the GOP. They're wrong about that though.
In our two party system you'll never see either party split though. The opposing party will just realign itself eventually to be compe ive again. Looks like the Dems will have to spend some time in the wilderness before that happens. Although you never know how quickly things can change.

Introspection is the hardest thing to do for parties, tbh... Dems were lucky to avoid doing it when Magic Negro showed up to pull a Trump before Donny did (and so, as you say, probably weren't aware of their precariousness).
But the GOP isn't off the hook either, IMO. This election was like Mondale vs Mondale. The two tiest candidates I can remember. The hope is that such terrible process (including the rigging job on the Dems side) forces more than just 30% of eligible voters to get involved in the primary process.
There's also one good thing that comes from losing, and you've seen this in the GOP too: there should now be a much bigger gamut of candidates on the Democratic side to pick from. Heck, arguably, the more you lose the more options you get.
Maybe they need to stop trying to effeminate men for starters.

I would have paid more attention, and possible voted for Sanders. I only voted for Trump as a vote against Clinton.
