Muddy Water's first recordings were for the Library of Congress back in 1941. His hearing of his own voice inspired him to become a professional musician. BTW, at the time, he was living on a plantation.

Does anyone give a ? I don't. I hate being burdened with this expertise.

    Poster: Hey...SFS...Muddy Waters?
SFS: hey dumbass...you think that was his real name? He was born, "McKinley Morganfield".
    Poster: Wow! is that Irish?
SFS: who cares...why don't you spend some time reflecting on how you can better serve the world.

Now tell us about how when Alan Lomax pulled up in that big car Muddy ran and hid because he thought it was the cops there to bust him on his moonshine business.

I own that CD and the liner notes are a must read.

Now what other blues cats does Muddy talk about? And tell us about who Lomax was actually looking for when he found Muddy Waters?

Dude, knowing all ya can about anything is pretty cool.

You work way too hard at this little guy, ok? Stick to talking tv shows and clowining, that's you, ok?

    that's Leon Russell

He died last November. He played with the Beach Boys. He was well respected. His first album includes guests such as George Harrison and Eric Clapton (I Shot the Sheriff).

Contrary to their name, they are not a blues band. But did you know that many of the members have a great respect of...yep...them blues?

    You're welcome.

See Avante...this is a normal conversation between two people. Not...

SFS: Did you know that Charlie Sextion played with Doyle Bramhall Jr.? Who was the son of Doyle Bramhall who played with Jimmy Vaughn and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Avante: GRRRRRRR...you shoot sick pedos in the head. Carl Lewis Jr. ran track for Houston.
SFS: Thanks. Keep away from the kids...allright?
Avante: GRRRRRRR...no one told me that some kids might be hairless and without boobies.

I'm a little embarrassed by the attention. But I think that the offset is that a few people will have a better understanding of Muddy Waters. Maybe one of you guys will end up on Jeopardy and be able to answer a Daily Double or maybe even the final question.

I like to think that you actually can learn something every day. If I'm the impetus for that...well then I can overlook my reluctance at being an expert.

All I see is guys like you that for some weird reason struggle with my knowledge of all this stuff. Why not relax and learn things? I have no equal when ir comes to them blues, track and football and ya get it all for free.

Most people have heard of BB King, don't have to be a fan of boxing to know about Muhammad Ali. Non rasslin' fans know who Hulk Hogan is.

Muddy Waters is pretty well known, as is Robert Johnson. I think most music fans know who they were.

Then there are guys like Avante. Who influensed BB King, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson? I go back to the very beginnings of it all, yep...Africa. If ya really know them blues it all starts there. Not BB King, not Muddy Waters or Robert Johnson, they are just very important in the story of them blues.

Think of all those great old blues cats who never recorded, keep in mind them old blues have been with us since those slavery days. Recorded blues not until the 20's. Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues" is considered the first legit "blues" recording in 1920. And it was women with a jazz band backing that were the first old blues. Ed Andrews a Georgia guitar played the first male to record "country blues", this was in 1924. Papa Charley Jackson and Daddy Stovepipe also recorded in 24. Kentucky guitar player Sylvester Weaver, played a banjo on a Sara Martin recording in 1923, some call him the first male to record them blues, so...hmmm?

The thing is there are so many who only a true geek about this stuff is aware of. So many shadowy characters with just a record or two. Not that the talent wasn't there, it was about the times. For every BB King there is a hundred D.A. Hunts, for every John Lee Hooker we have a hundred Garfield Akers, and for every legend like Robert Johnson a thousand, T.J.Johnson's.

I own all that stuff, all those old obscure blues cats only us geeks are aware of.

This guy only recorded one record and it is a classic. He was a St. Louis barber, and his "Cairo" one of the great listens in them blues.

Sun Records recorded the first Howlin; Wolf stuff in the early 50's. Obviously the Elivis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash recordings made Sun Records famous in the mid 50's.

    Then there was this lost...................

When The Beatles first laned here in the USA, a mic was shoved in the face of John Lennon.

reporter...so, what is the first thing you want to do, now that you are here?
Lennon....meet Muddy Waters (The Rolling Stones named after one of his songs)

Brian Jones was a HUGE Elmore James fan (his mom dated Robert Johnson). both him and Mick heavy into them blues.

Here they are doing a great cover of Howlin' Wolfs "Little Red Rooster".

    The great Elmore James.

Clapton does a great cover of this classic.

But, it all goes back to guys like Gus Cannon whose dad was a slave.

Nowhere in the song is Viola Lee mentioned. The Grateful Dead nail it with their version.

I learned to play the harmonica listening to Noah Lewis here.

Later tonight a Josh White mix, now I have about 8 songs he did prior to 1940, so to fill up a 90 minute tape I'd need about 22 more songs keeping in the Josh White mood, so who do I need? Looking for pre 1940 stuff.

    Josh White

I spend about two/three hours a day lost in that world above. SFS wouldn't make a zit on my ass when it comes to this stuff and everyone knows that. So it's funny watching ya little s acting goofy over it. I'd be learning all I could if I were you, I never fight learning things.

This is my favorite blues song, if I could own only one song, here it is. This is in my opinion as good as recorded music gets.
