2005 the proper analog for this year?

In 2005, we were just behind heavily favored Phoenix all year (usually running a few games behind) before briefly overtaking them in March (like the Warriors this year) but then falling back and resting a bunch and acquiescing to being the #2 overall and Western seed. We sat out Tim the last 15 games of the season, he did have a mildly sprained ankle he suffered in Detroit in early March but he was well enough to have played at least the last week or two if we wanted him to. We also sat out Manu a lot down the stretch just because he'd played so hard during the season. We had some awful players playing big minutes in losses in late March and April of that year. We were well on our way to a >60 win season that year but settled for a number in the high 50s and a lot more rest which gave us a key advantage in winning the championship that year.

The Spurs went through a young Nuggets teams in Rd 1, outlasted Sonics in a gruesome Semifinals. A healthy Joe Johnson could've pushed the West finals to 6 or 7 games. The Finals went 7 games.

The Spurs were fortunate to have a lot of weapons and in their peak that season.

Like in 2005, the Spurs beat the favored #1 seed in the regular season 2 out of 3 times this year, including in their home building. The Nuggets and Sonics were both huge pains in the ass in the regular season that year. Of course the Pistons finals was legendary.

Nah. Manu cannibalized him too much. Did TD have the... 48 point comeback game against the best RS team... how about the back to back 40 point double OT nights? That wasn't TD. TD wasn't close to league MVP even if he played all 82. He was barely the MVP of the Spurs.
