Why not just follow the same formula we did with Saddam in the 90s post Gulf War? Contain through bombing and through the U.N. Elections aren't a viable solution and removing Assad isn't a viable solution until ISIS is removed as well.

I don't think it's entirely clear who his own army is anymore. So many of his small religious sect are gone. The Russians and Iranians are going to be forced into exerting some sort of control. They can't have Trump selectively bombing as he chooses.
