Apparently the timing is the result of Rod Rosenstein (who would have been Comey's new boss) just getting confirmed recently.

Comey's firing has little to do with Trump. He was fired because his new boss, Rod Rosenstein, didn't like how he handled the Hillary email investigation. Isn't that what you libs wanted?
That's all fine and good if true (link?) but it's still perfectly fair to point out the optics of firing him right now. That doesn't make him some kind of lib hero.
Trump has had nothing but good things to say about Comey's handling of the emails, and it's a little weird that Sessions recommended his firing after recusing himself from the Russia investigation.

Kinda feel for the guy. He ed up when he laid out a laundry list of laws broken by Clinton and then did not recommend prosecution. He tried to play both sides and failed miserably. With that move he lost the confidence of both Rs and Ds, along with his own department. Good riddance.
