The report indicates that Russian hacking may have penetrated further into U.S. voting systems than was previously understood. It states unequivocally in its summary statement that it was Russian military intelligence, specifically the Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU, that conducted the cyber attacks described in the do ent:

Russian General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate actors … executed cyber espionage operations against a named U.S. company in August 2016, evidently to obtain information on elections-related software and hardware solutions. … The actors likely used data obtained from that operation to … launch a voter registration-themed spear-phishing campaign targeting U.S. local government organizations.

This NSA summary judgment is sharply at odds with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial last week that Russia had interfered in foreign elections: “We never engaged in that on a state level, and have no intention of doing so.” Putin, who had previously issued blanket denials that any such Russian meddling occurred, for the first time floated the possibility that freelance Russian hackers with “patriotic leanings” may have been responsible. The NSA report, on the contrary, displays no doubt that the cyber assault was carried out by the GRU.

The NSA analysis does not draw conclusions about whether the interference had any effect on the election’s outcome and concedes that much remains unknown about the extent of the hackers’ accomplishments. However, the report raises the possibility that Russian hacking may have breached at least some elements of the voting system, with disconcertingly uncertain results.

The NSA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence were both contacted for this article. Officials requested that we not publish or report on the top secret do ent and declined to comment on it. When informed that we intended to go ahead with this story, the NSA requested a number of redactions. The Intercept agreed to some of the redaction requests after determining that the disclosure of that material was not clearly in the public interest.

Sorry but ducks semen shielding Trump by pointing out how the leaker was arrested is not another iteration of the OP.

The details of Russian involvement hacking with specific examples of who, what, where, when, and how it more than threadworthy. The article is noteworthy and a must read IMO.

This was an interesting article that I read a few days back and it certainly strongly implies an effort to hack into our system by Russia. Putin, being of the old faction, would likely harbor resentment for the United States own interference in Russian elections, specifically the 1996 election which Yeltsin won largely due to U.S. involvement. I guess one could argue then just what degree of interference in another nation's elections cons utes an act of war. Being that the U.S. and Russia accounted for interference in one out of nine executive elections in other countries (between 1946 and 2000), and are thus authorities on indirect invasion of a nation's sovereignty, perhaps they would be best be able to determine the answer to this.

Given that he was appointed Yeltsin's deputy in 1997 that seems pretty ignorant. I also fail to see how an IMF loan is analogous to hacking or "mostly" anything nor do I see how that explains his interference in other Northern European elections in the same manner.

Kissinger certainly was a prick though and his Nobel prize is a study in irony.

A US intelligence official contacted by The Intercept said the do ent's findings were not necessarily definitive and warned against drawing too many conclusions from the analysis. The Intercept said it was unclear from the do ent whether the hackers had an effect on the election's outcome.

& a fortnight from now they'll come back over this & say it was never true.

It's all about TRUMP. Media/Dems creating funnel clouds all over the place. & if they're able to topple him it will settle down in like 72 hours. Sure, they'll beat him 24/7 for years, but, all this mish mash will disappear immediately and we can get back to life like it was the first 250 years. & that's what D's & R's & Media want, both sides of the aisle, both sides of Media. They can't operate like this. It's killing them with jealousy & envy. His being POTUS is bad enough for them, but, doing Presidential things drives them close to insanity, a grassy knoll & a scoped weapon.

But, by God that glorious SOB mopped the in' with her in' ass. I saw that. It happened. I will take that to the grave. & nobody can take that from me.

God bless the United States of America and the men who made her free.

it wasn't just an IMF loan, that was towards the end when it appeared that a communist victory was a possibility. there was plenty of U.S. involvement before that, since 1993 really. the U.S. had every intention of steering russian ideology towards the sunset. in fact, NATO (and eventually the EU) started their descent upon the russian border during this decade, with yeltsin's approval, even if it was tacit. putin has always referred to this time as a great "geopolitical catastrophe" and vowed to restore russia's "honor and dignity". putin's "restoration ideology" was only spurned on even further when the west challenged the 2004 Ukrainian elections. what motives would you assign to the U.S. for meddling in so many other nations' elections? and kissinger's nobel is a study in irony indeed but one can add obama's own nobel as a part of that syllabus.

see, when you try to jam too many "jokes" into one line it brings the whole thing down

you should have just said "cooper," and focused on the "lamebert is attracted to anderson cooper" insult. you could always save "pooper" for another time.

    better luck next time.
