For all the similarities between President Donald Trump’s Russiagate scandal (or, as I prefer to call it, Onion Dome) and Watergate—the special counsels; the Congressional hearings; the talk of obstruction of justice and secret tapes—there’s one parallel that is getting less attention.

In Watergate as in Onion Dome, defenders of the president plunged deep into conspiracy theory to explain away a growing body of evidence pointing to serious White House wrongdoing. Today, Trump surrogates deny Russian interference in the election and assert that U.S. intelligence agencies—portentously (and inaccurately) called the “Deep State”—are hoping to overturn the election results through leaks and fake news. And though it has largely been forgotten, some Nixon acolytes during and after Watergate pushed a very similar claim: that the CIA, the Pentagon or other entrenched government interests secretly conspired to oust Nixon for their own reasons, even as the news media trumpeted a phony narrative about the president’s guilt. Tracing the history of those Watergate-era claims—their origins as a diversionary cover story, their intrinsic appeal to loyalists who were in denial about the scandal’s gravity, their afterlife among radical skeptics on the ideological fringes of public debate—may help illuminate similar thinking of those determined today to see Onion Dome as a plot by Trump’s enemies to maintain the status quo.

Nixon went quietly into the night.

    Trump has no such intention.

Nixon knew he would lose the vote in both the house and senate so resigned so he could receive Ford's pardon. Of course the disciple of Roy Cohn would fight a losing battle no matter the cost.

at Darrin doubling down on it. Have to love the guilty conscience.

At least the dimwits back in the 70s had actual players and a plausible narrative. Darrin basically is wishing as hard as he can and trying to prove it's possible.

Reminds me of the god deluded trying to maintain that their God is possible as opposed to proving his existence.

Because Nixon had no where to go, no money, no support beam, no belief.

Trump can go right back to that Tower, to freedom, to wealth beyond imagination, to a blood line who will wedge in there shoulder-to-shoulder as wide as it takes, to a pulpit that no one can stop now and will not stop then. He'll be on that vacated grassy knoll with that "rifle" until there are no more tomorrows.

Sure, that won't be as good as this, but, it'll be right up against it.

Someone with nowhere to go and nothing to lose fights until the bitter end.

Someone that has somewhere to go and a whole lot to lose does not.

OP not realizing that collusion with Russia is a contrived conspiracy theory.

There's a reason the narrative has switched from collusion to obstruction.

right the reason we started talking about obstruction was that the president committed obstruction.

You sure like arguing from ignorance and pretending that means you can come to a conclusion of your preferred outcome.

Further, while there is no evidence of collusion from Trump directly that we know of there is evidence that some of his deputies and former deputies did. Flynn got paid. Manafort worked with Russia's allies and behaved with a conflict of interest. Kushner had dealings with Russian state banks. They all lied about it. And on and on.

From the other end, we also know that the Russians were actively trying to recruit Trump and his deputies.

And throughout all of this Trump and his deputies have lied about contact, business relationships, payments, and communications while Trump and co actively obstruct the investigation.

The President went on to say that if there were some ‘satellite’ associates of his who did something wrong, it would be good to find that out, but that he hadn’t done anything wrong and hoped I would find a way to get it out that we weren’t investigating him.

You then go on to cite this as evidence of collusion.

Flynn got paid. Manafort worked with Russia's allies and behaved with a conflict of interest. Kushner had dealings with Russian state banks. They all lied about it. And on and on.
